Visiting Riyadh:the formalities

by tokma Online Now Dec 27, 2011 at 5:14 PM

my daughter has just started working in riyadh and we would like to visit her. however, getting into riyadh appears to be problematic. Her husband has to have his passport, marriage certificate and other documents translated into Arabic and we cannot apply for visas unless my daughter "invites" us over. Is this true? Does it mean therefore that visitors are not encouraged? Appreciate advice / thank you.

I had researched entry permits to Saudi Arabia some time ago and the requirements are very strict and fairly complicated.
The best option would probably be to contact the Saudi embassy in your contry or look at their websites to get precise information. What I know from colleagues is, that the immigration authorities are very thorough.

Requirements are indeed strict. Your daughter must first 'sponsor' you and obtain authorisation for your visit.

You do not state your country of citizenship (the UK?) but the website of the UK Saudi embassy gives info about family visit visas which is relevant to all citizenships:

It is not so much a matter of visitors being actively discouraged as of Saudi Arabia having very strict entry requirements. Entry requirements vary from country to country, of course, with some being much stricter than others.

    Hi Grandma)

Regarding getting Marriage Certificate translate into Arabic, they should be companies translate it, or your daughter should contact her local embassy seek the information.

Visiting your daughter that will be task

    1. She has to official invite you.

    2. You have send a copy of passport to your daughter.

    3. Your daughter has summit loads of paper work to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs MFA) i.e. residence letter from her work I think few other documents) your daughter needs find out, how long she needs to have residence) before she can invite family members.

    4. MFA will transfer all does document to MOI Ministry of Interior.

    5. You have to wait – 1 month or 3 months.

    6. Your daughter has go back MFA get the special number.

    7. Grandma You need get visa form from Saudi Embassy.

    8. Fill out all section of form.

    9. Photos.

    10. Payment.

    11. You have give the Saudi Embassy special number.

This is what my friend did in mid 2010 when he invited his mother to Kingdom – he stated it was lot hard work. Well worth it seeing his mother again.

You daughter needs find out if she needs travel to the capital or there is local office of MFA in her city.

I sincerely hope all the information I have provide will be hopeful.

yes, will update latest. We have a few options and one of which is that there is an agency which (for a fee of course) will do the translation of the necessary documentation, liase with the embassy and expedite the application process. The other is to meet my daughter half way, not in Riyadh but in Mecca. Thanks for your helpful info.

    Hello everyone,

Just to share the good news that we did make it to Riyadh eventually. We emailed scanned copies of our passports, my birth certificate to my daughter in riyadh. she had these documents transalated at her end which she then submitted to the relevant visa department in Riyadh. In less than a month we received a faxed document from her with our names on it. the document is in Arabic but I could read our names on it.We then took this document together with our original passports and handed it to an agency which had arranged for my daughter's employment in Riyadh. We paid US300 to the agency. We did not have to go to the Embassy ourselves. Within 2 weeks we got our visa and the best surprise of all was we were given a 90 day visa - we were expecting a 30day visa only. I am sorry I do not really know what documentation had to be filled up. Fate somehow intervened and before we knew it we were on the flight bound for Riyadh. It was the best, smoothest ride in my life on Qatar Airways. Alhamdullilah.
