Hi everyone. I am trying to choose an apartment and can't figure out the best, non-touristy area to live in. Any suggestions?
I guess before I give my opinion on the best neighborhoods, can I ask what you'll be doing down here? Will you be working? Traffic and commuting can be time consuming here, so that may play a big factor in where you want to live. Is budget a concern?

well indeed you need to tell us more. I go there often, lived there for long periods and going again end of march. The distances and travel is long; but areas of Niteroi and Duque de Caixas is nice for living, for visiting you need to come into Rio, Urca and Jardim Botanico or barra de tijuca as neighborhoods goes.
hope it helps

Neighborhoods by the beach are among the best, but are also the most touristy ares: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon. Others to consider, out of the touristy scene are Jardim Botanico, Horto, Gavea, Humaitá, Urca & Flamengo.

If you can afford it then Urca and Gavea are very nice areas, but if you are looking for a cheaper option then Tijuca is a pretty cool neighbourhood aswell.

No, we won't be working, thank God. It would be purely a pleasure trip. We are looking at budget and moderate accommodations. We are also looking for recommendations for restaurants and jazz clubs.

Yeah, we will stay out of Copacabana and Leblon, way too touristy.

Then also I'd opt for a neighborhood like Tijuca as a well rounded area lower in cost.

If you are looking for a short-term furnished apto, most will be in the Zona Sul neighborhoods. Really Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are residential neighborhoods with lots of locals and shops catering to their everyday needs.

For jazz, try TheMaze club in Tavares Bastos.

Difficult question...but all I can guarantee is that the city is very overpriced actually.
