Brazil now has a 300 reais a day limit on ATM Machines.. That is about $150.US a day.. I doubt you will want to be limited to only that small of an amount when on Vacation. I verified this new rule when I called my contact person in Rio.. My advice is to STAY AWAY fro Brazil..
News flash: Brazilian businesses accept credit cards. The legitimate ones, anyway. Who needs more than BRL 300 in cash every single day?

That is pure stupid to say "Stay away from Brazil" because of that limit. If your hotel is paid for what are you going to spend $150 on per day, drinks perhaps ?

Why would anyone want to carry $150.00, that would be a stupid thing to do in the first place, you will only get mugged for it. The main reason one should stay away from Brazil is because of the crime, and if that does not worry you, go and have a great time.

It's not a reason to stay away. It's just useful information to help you plan. You are most likely to pay for hotels and meals in more central places with a credit card rather than cash. As for carrying that much money, you can use a money belt or some such if it is necessary.

this is a good law as finances goes there, I will be there end of march have branches there for work, and have lived in the country, speak fluent Portuguese.
if you are visiting should not be a problem at all for 150 or 300 BRL, you will be wise to use the credit/debit card in tourist areas that you will be in.
for me the amount is correct. Ihave my hotel and flight paid for already, and the food will be handle by the branch most of the time, so onbusiness is good too
NO need to stay away from a country because of this. Unless you want to start an interesting thread to amuse you.
cheers

I don't see a minor regulation like this being a reason to boycott an entire country.

This is untrue. Brazilian ATMs allow a daily limit for withdrawals of up to Rs$ 1,000, though card issuers often impose lower limits. (In my case, my UK bank permits up to £300 a day.) I withdrew Rs$ 700from Banco do Brasil this morning.

During the week of March 4-8, 2013, the HSBC branch on rua Rainha Guilhermina Leblon in Rio de Janeiro has been allowing only R$300,00/day even though it says it allows R$1.000,00/day. The girl working there says this will be the case for a while. The Citibank branch nearby allow more sure how much, but only has notes of R$20,00. A person working there said there was fraudulent actions against many of the ATMs in Rio during Carnaval. The media has not been saying much about this. At the Banco do Brasil branch on Av. Bartolomeu Mitre, I was able to withdraw only R$500,00, even though the lady working there says the limit should be R$1.000,00. My debit card issuer says I can withdraw US$1,000.00/day, which would be almost R$2.000,00. So the best strategy is to try all the banks in your area.

Correction: "sure how much" should read sure how much

Correction: "sure how much" should read "I am not sure how much."

This is generally good advice anywhere in the world. I have had experiences whereby, with obviously the same credit limit, banks in the same cities overseas have only allowed me certain different amounts of withdrawals.
