OK, Washington, DC appears to be pet friendly on the Mall and there are hotels in the area that cater to pet owners. We want to leave the big vehicle parked at relatives house near Richmond and take public transit into Washington. Bad news though--Amtrak has strict policies even against hard sided pet carriers for small dogs. Any other trains, buses, or other transit services between Richmond and DC that will allow us to transport the miniature schnauzer?

Rental car is the default option for most tourists. But, I drive for a living. The last thing I want is to drive and bother with parking a rental car. We want to take public transit into Washington.

Greyhound also does not allow pets. You can try contacting these two http://www.easternshuttle.com/ http://www.2001bus.com/

VRE only goes as far as Fredericksburg, but it might be something to consider: http://www.vre.org/service/systmmp.htm "Only small pets are allowed, and only if carried in closed containers." vre.org/service/policies.htm... Washington DC isn't a place I would want to drive much of anything. The roads can be a real tangle.

Greyhound official policy doesn't allow pets, but I've seen passengers with pet carriers on their lap more than once. One time during a rest stop, I saw a passenger opened his pet carrier and his cat leaped out and nearly ran away in the few minutes before everyone had to return to the bus. My miniature schnauzer is more domesticated than that.

Thanks Glen for the VRE tip. I can see that this regional rail line does go into VA quite a ways. I'm also looking at those shuttle systems.
