by barb4054 Online Now Jan 9, 2010 at 11:55 PM

Hi,I am planning a rather short trip to Reykjavik (just one week) and would love to meet some "locals" for a chat, a cup of coffee, maybe going out? I travel alone, will be staying in Saga Hotel, most probably first week of February.My wish is to see the Northern Lights- is there any chance of that?! Cheers, Barbara P.S. am female, fiftish, good looking (-;

    Hi good-looking Barb! Well, they do recommend Oct to March (maybe even September) for seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland and there are tours that can pick you up from your hotel such as natureexplorer.is/daytours/n... But as this particular website says, it depends on the weather conditions too. I did see that Radisson Saga Hotel which I think is near the domestic airport, and about 10 minutes walk at least from the city centre unfortunately. But it is a goodlooking hotel, four star I think. I stayed at the Hilton which is farther off from the city center and I wish I stayed in the city center itself where there is more activity. However, you will also be close to the PEARL which does have nice evening dinners - on the 5th floor and the outdoor decks give great views of the city. Have fun!

    See the autora borealis depends on a number of factors - being fairly far north and being there in the winter months (long nights and short days). Two other things need to be working in your favour: 1. Level of solar magnetic activity that causes the aurora. Things are not looking great right now on that front. The sun seems to be unusually "quiet" right now. See the following link for a forecast: gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraForec... as time for your trip gets closer. 2. Visibility - clear cloudless night is best, so Reykjavik may not be working in your favour. I've been through Reykjavik four times now and have never managed to make it on a day that was not totally overcast, but that was during summer months. Moonless nights are good - light from a full moon will overpower the aurora. Finally, you have to get out of town - the light pollution from city lights will also drown out the display. The two times I've seen the aurora I was about 20 km (12 mi) away from the nearest city.
