Does anyone have experience with the areas of Russia that the Mongol Rally generally goes through (i.e. the northern coast of the Caspian between Ukraine and Kazakhstan, and the Altai region crossing from Kazakhstan to Mongolia). especially the border crossings, and driving a foreign vehicle through these regions? What can we expect?
I will be going to Dubna for five weeks this summer and was wondering how safe it is as a whole. I am looking to do some morning running and want to make sure that this is advisable. What is crime like in the city? Are there areas to avoid, times to avoid being out alone (of course middle of the night, but otherwise). My assumption is that it is quite a safe place due to it being a scientific town with a relatively small size, but I would like to make sure before I go.
Will running be a problem or hazardous, or will I be fine if I exercise the normal precautions used when running elsewhere?

I am travelling to Moscow next week. I would need to do lot of emails, browsing and navigation there. Carrying data packages from India is far to expensive. What would be a good and cheap option to use internet in Russia. Do we have readily available Wi-Fi zones there?

I wish to take a Trans Mongolian Train Trip from Moscow to Beijing with stop overs in Irkutz and then Ulan Bator. I have had a previous bad experience (not Russia) of buying and paying for tickets on line which was never secured or my money refunded. I am also concerned about being charged at the whim of the vendor. On line I see Real Russia is recommended as an agency to buy these tickets from. Please assist. I need to secure with reputable suppliers for accommodation & transport in proof to apply for a Russian Visa here in South Africa.

My bf nd I are thinking of taking a cruise from Helsinki to St Petersburg, where we will spend arnd 8 hours. Im a bit overwhelmed as there seems to be so much to do in the city, thats why i want to know from the people that have been there, what is a MUST see and experience in order to get the whole St Petersburg vibe? I dont want the day to be fully packed and only being in museums; it would be nice to waalk arnd and maybe do some shopping.

I have oportunity to visit Moscow( won the trip) but i only have limited choice of hotels.

Last time i was in Moskva, was in 1987 and we stayed in Student Dorm.
I experianced Moskva Metro, and I am more than Ok using it.After all i lived in London for 4 years!
My question for you Moscovites it which of this hotels has easiest access to the Center, Kremljin, Sv Vasilij Church, Red Square....
I kept looking at the Metro Map, but what i see on the map is not the nessesary fastes and straitforward way getting to the center and I get totally confused.

I've been planning in going on vacation for quite some time, and I would love to go to Kazan as it's a bit warmer than the rest of Russia in winter (according to wikipedia anyway!) and I'll be going in January/February. But while doing research I came across some articles saying that travel to Kazan from Canada was quite difficult compared to other Russian cities. It came across that it was quite impossible to efficiently get to there, from here. I'd have to go from Calgary, to Frankfurt, to Moscow, then Kazan because Canadians cannot enter from anywhere other than another Russian city. This article was a bit outdated ('07) and I'm not sure of anything has changed. By any chance do you have a better idea on travelling there?

I posted this question yesterday, but perhaps I didn't add it correctly as it is not there or recorded in my account info. I am looking for old pictures, and information on the history, of the Shalyapin Palace Hotel. I am specifically interested in the history of the Smolentzev and Shmelev trading house and I believe that the building is now the Shalyapin Palace Hotel. Could anyone give me some information or direct me to where I can find informaiton or old pictures? Is there verification that these are the same buildings, and is there information on the former owners. They were apparently E. Smolentzev and N.P. Shmelev. I believe these were Efim Smolentzev and Nikolai Pavlovich Shmelev and would like to find out information on this building and its owners, and whether there are any remenants or signs of these former owners in this building. My family is planning a trip to visit the city in the future and we have a great interest in this building.

Some assitance please; I was contacted by a person in Kazan, Russia. We have been sending e-mails for about two weeks and I have noticed that my questions don't get answered. She sent me her address, and I sent her a letter via UPS a week ago. UPS tells me that they can't deliver the letter because the address is incomplete. How can I find out if this person is for real and not scamming me? And how can I find out if this address is correct? I receive pictures with all her e-mails, but how can I know it her.

Hello to all. I have a question about scamms. A woman from Kazan contacted by internet. We exchanged e-mails and have been coresponding for about a week now. It all just seems a little strange to me. She gave me her adress, she has been sending me pictures (but who's to say that it is her). I was really interested to learn about the city as I have been looking it up on the net. Anyway it would be nice to know if this woman is sincere. I have been contacted before by 2 other women in the past claiming to be from Russia and they dropped of the face of the earth after a few e-mails.
