Serbia in May - Best places to go?

by MiguelMV Online Now Feb 3, 2008 at 4:35 AM

Hi VTers. I'm planning a trip to Serbia in May. I'll be attending the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade, but before that I'd like to spend 1 week travelling around Serbia, or combine Serbia & Macedonia. I'd like to have your advice, such as what are the most interesting places to visit, how many days should I spend in each place, etc. I'm interested in monasteries, castles, palaces and some nice landscapes too. I wonder if it'll be a good idea to rent a car for the whole week, and I also wonder if I decide to travel to Macedonia & Serbia, whether if it's better to drive from Skopje north to Serbia, or if it's better to take a plane from Skopje to Belgrade and then rent another car there. Also, would like to know about nice hotels outside Belgrade. I don't need hotels to be cheap, won't mind paying a bit more, as long as they're nice. Thanks!

In general I found the most scenic and interesting places in Serbia to be in the southern half of the country, which is almost entirely hilly or mountainous. You could either do a loop south from Belgrade, or start in Skopje and head north. Within Serbia the mediaeval monasteries are certainly among the highlights. They are generally quite small in size, but many have beautiful frescos inside and almost all are situated in scenic valleys - it's the combination of the architecture and the setting that makes them so appealing. Having a car would certainly make it a lot easier to see some of these as getting to them by bus is possible but time-consuming. Manasija, just off the Skopje-Belgrade highway, is one of the most impressive because of its fortified exterior. There is also a group of them around Novi Pazar and Kraljevo further west. If you head in that direction, you could also visit the Zlatibor region which has some lovely rural scenery. In fact Zlatibor could be a nice place to base yourself for a few days - on the whole towns and cities in this region are quite functional so none really stands out as a place to stay. I haven't mentioned the northern province of Vojvodina, it does have places to see but is somehow less distinctive than southern Serbia. If you want to visit places like Novi Sad you don't really need a car, it's an easy daytrip from Belgrade. I think there's plenty to keep you occupied for a week in Serbia. Macedonia is also a great place to visit, but many of the most attractive places such as Ohrid are in the south. Although the main roads are very good, it's still the "wrong" direction from Skopje if you want to end up in Belgrade so would add a fair bit of driving. Also it can be quite hard to find good flight options to Skopje. One thing that occurs to me: if you want to combine Serbia with somewhere else, maybe Montenegro would be of interest. Many of the places I metioned (Zlatibor, Novi Pazar) are roughly between Belgrade and Montengro. And the amazing Durmitor National Park and Tara Canyon are in northern Montenegro, just over the border.

Good day trip could be Smederevo, Topola, Despotovac (Manasija), and then night by the waterfall with visits of Kragujevac and Studenica and Zica monasteries. Of course if you have time you can spend night in Kragujevac and see a bit more, maybe Nis. The other good way is by Danube - Smederevo, Golubac, Lepenski vir, Donji Milanovac. You should not miss Novi Sad too. If you need more info feel free to e-mail us and ask whatever. I&V
