Cycling from Reno to Lake Tahoe via Rt, 431

Will be in Reno for 2 weeks and was wondering if Rt. 431 running from south Reno to Lake Tahoe is a suitable road to ride up to the lake. Is there a bike lane for the entire distance? What is the average grade?

What is the best plan for a quick night's sleep in Reno? I am just passing thru on my way to Las Vegas. The big casinos offer very low rates but all I really need is a bed for the night and a shower. Are there any small motels near Reno that are clean, secure area to park overnight at a budget price?

by papabigjim Online Now Oct 10, 2011 at 1:53 PM

We are planning a trip to San Francisco in January and would like to know about driving our rental car to Reno. We come from Hawaii so driving in winter weather will be new for us. We originally thought about going to Lake Tahoe but decided Reno might be a safer drive. If driving to Reno would not be a good idea, any suggestions on another location with snow that we could drive to safely. Mahalo for your help.

    • getting from Reno to Mammoth and back

by michelleava Online Now Mar 2, 2011 at 3:31 PM

we are a family of 4 and we want to drive from Reno airport to mammoth, ski for a week and then drive back to reno airport. We only wanted a one way car rental and we contacted Enterprise rentals and they said no. As far as I know, the other rental companies wont do it either. So now we have to rent a car for the whole week ( when we will be skiing, not driving)at mammoth and return it to Reno. I have been told the shuttle to mammoth leaves at 1pm and our flight doesnt get into Reno till later. Any suggestions on a cheap way to get from reno airport to mammoth and back?( please dont tell me we should ski at tahoe. I'm skiing at mammoth because it works out cheaper and we still get to stay in a great place.)

    • Should we rent a car in Reno

by lilychong31 Online Now Jan 21, 2011 at 11:21 PM

Hi, we'll be in Reno in mid February and staying at the Atlantis Casino & Resort Hotel for 3 days. We would like to have a relaxing break and do some sight-seeing in Lake Tahoe. Please advise whether we should rent a car and drive ourselves around or can we join some good whole day tours that would take us to Lake Tahoe and back in the evenings for us to eat at Asian restuarants and catch some good shows or movies. If you recommend self-drive, should we reserve a car ahead or should we just do it after getting to Reno? Thank you in advance for your replies. Best regards, Lily

OK Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines. I will be in Reno for 3 days in early October. Am a great fan of buffets and curious as to your favorites there. I'm staying at ElDorado and hear their buffet is pretty good. Also, why do most of the hotels offer a 2 for 1 deal for seniors? I'm a senior but travel alone. Why don't they just offer a discount for seniors?

I have a great love of driving and seeing new sites, but I have a bit of fear about being stranded alone or lost in the middle of nowhere. How remote is the drive between Lake Tahoe and Vegas? I can handle 30-60 minutes of nowhere at a time but then I like to know there are a few residences or businesses or something to cling to ...lol. Is there other traffic or will I be all alone most of this drive? Thanks for any help!

Looking for non-max-bet progressive slots (nickel or penny)

by suziezed Online Now Dec 18, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Hi friends - coming down to Reno next week on the bus from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Haven't been in years (maybe last time 2002 or 2003). At our casino here we have a bank of fourteen 2 cent machines that have a variety of progessive jackpots that do not require you to play max bet to win. They are called BC Gold and are wired together with somewhere between 250-300 other similar machines in other casinos throughout the province. I am wondering if there is anything similar at any of the downtown Reno casinos - progressive machines that don't require you to be playing max bet to win the jackpot. They don't need to be big jackpots - I just enjoy playing with the occasional10-$15 win to keep me going - but it is frustrating when you've got to be playing max bet to even win the lower level prizes. I'm also fond of jackpot party machines which have pretty much disappeared from our casino here - if anyone can fill me in on where any of those might be in the downtown area I'd appreciate knowing (nickel). Thanks - and looking forward to Christmas in Reno (especially buffet at Silver Legacy - yum!). Susan

Hi- Originally from N.Cal. but now living in Portland been to Reno& V.City many times as a kid and adult, but now having to see it in different light as we plan it for my own kids. We are planning a family trip to Virginia City with our boys, and then possibly going to Reno for the evening. If not that evening, we may stop the next morning and do Brunch at Circus Circus and hit the midway for them before we head out of town. 1st question: Is there a place to pan gold in Virginia City? I have found 1 article that said right next to Newspaper Museum was a stand to do this, etc? It doesnt have to be great, but my boys want to do it. I want to confirm this or find another place, etc. so we can plan our trip! 2nd question: What time does the Midway at CC open? If I remember right, it was like 10am. I checked their website and it doesnt state. 3rd question: Any idea on the cost of a Friday morning Brunch at Circus Circus, need adult price and child price! Any other hints, tips, info you can pass on would be great!! TIA

    • Do rental cars come with snow tires?

We will be visiting the Reno area as we have many times but never in winter. We plan on coming the end of February. We plan on flying into Sacramento or Las Vegas to get a non stop flight because of disabilities. Do the car rental agencies furnish snow tires? Are we likely to need them? Which would be better roadwise not timewise to drive from to Reno?

Hello I will be out westward in February most likely... I will be in California but also want to check out the Salt Flats of Utah on my way back to Illinois. I was thinking of driving from Reno to Salt Lake City. It looks like a scary baren drive... is it? My other main question is - in 1985 two men shot themselves in the face in a Reno churchyard (or in Sparks?) I was wondering if any of you locals knew more about this or what church it was, and if the merry go round is still there. I doubt it, but I thought I'd ask. They made this movie about it: video.google.com/videoplay?d... Thanks for reading.

by writerinthesage Online Now Sep 20, 2007 at 10:18 AM

My husband and I have traveled to Reno about five times a year, on average, for the past ten years. We have stayed in every casino hotel in Reno, as well a little boutique hotel in the downtown area, by the railroad. We have been disappointed with the majority of our rooms. Some have been standard rooms, some have been suites. One of the nicest suites was at the Grand Sierra Resort, a few months back, but we are looking for a non casino property, a true four star hotel. We usually stay at Kimpton properties when we travel to San Francisco and Salt Lake City. We enjoy the amenities and luxuries of these properties. Does anyone know of something similar, other than the Grand Sierra Resort, in the Reno area? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have for us.

I recently lost my 14 year old sister in a tragic accident. My fiancee' and I decided to go to Lake Tahoe to be married at the end of March. I'm not able to handle being married at home at the church my sister's funeral was just at. I think it's best to have a small, romantic ceremony away from home. I'm looking for help planning a tasteful but economical wedding. I'd really like something in the mountains with a beautiful view. I'd imagine some of the more reasonable, quaint chapels do not have websites. Does anyone have any ideas? Any help you could provide is greatly appreciated! David and I are just starting out and money is tight. I want something romantic but money is a huge factor. We'd only have a max of 4 guests. Thank you kindly.

    • Snow Chains? Winter travel from San Francisco to Reno

by kkerlin Online Now Nov 25, 2006 at 5:15 PM

Hi Reno locals and Tahoe/Reno Travelers: I was hoping someone could describe the driving situation during the winter for this route. I understand that during snow storms or heavy snow/ice on the roads, that there are stops where you are told you either have to put chains on your tires or turn around? I'll be traveling to Reno from San Fran about once a month throughout the winter. I have an all-wheel drive car and am told if I'm going to use chains I have to have them on all 4 tires? My main questions are: how prevalent is the need for chains during the winter? Should I purchase my own or can I buy some along the way if it does turn out they won't allow people to go through w/o chains? is it usually necessary to even have chains if you have good tires and all-wheel drive? and is it true that there are people/services along the way that will help you put the chains on? I'd appreciate any information on this. Thanks much!
