What areas of the Atacama would be of most interest to a backpacker with seven to ten days to spend in the Atacama and Patagonia? Will not have a car.
I am most familiar with the Northern Atacama east of Arica. This area may be of interest to you because of the numerous petroglyphs, extremely dry conditions, numerous volcanoes, and very few tourists. This area gets less than a quarter of an inch a rain a year. The area around Putre, Chile has a lot of backpackers who hike up to one of the volcanoes. The altitude is the main draw back with the area being even higher than Lake Titicaca at over 16,000 feet in spots. If you go be sure and get acclimated before attempting the higher altitudes. I have pages on Putre, Lake Chungara, and the national park. hope this helps.
