Kids, Dogs and Lake Shasta

What are fun teams to do on Lake Shasta with kids and a dog? We have a house boat for a week and we know about the caverns. What else can we do? Also, what is a good place to stay, preferably near Lake Head, with a dog, Saturday night before we get on the boat? We don't want to camp because we are carrying so much gear already?
