What is life like in Recife for an american? Are there many other americans living there? I am told there is high crime in Brazil, is that also true in Recife? Are there international schools or private schools for children in Recife?
I've lived in Recife, but probably too long ago for me to have much useful advice. It's a big city, effectively the capital of the relatively poor Northeast. Crime is a problem: take sensible precautions. There is a small US community, a Consulate, and American School (http://www.state.gov/m/a/os/1528.html). Wonderful beaches!

i lived in recife a few years back and it's the best developed city in the north east. as long as you live out in boa viagem or candeias, by the beach you will be fine. crime is a problem but not more than in a place like LA for instance. a few years back recife was a big hangout for foreign sex tourists, but there has been a big clean up in recent years and it's now much more pleasant.
