If you stay in the village of Giza it is an exellent starting point for Sakkara, Dashur, AbuSir, Memphis and also central Cairo.

If you need a place to stay I know of a wonderful guest house just in front of the sphinx and pyramids :)

Giza is fundamentally the residential (&recent)suburb of Cairo. Not much other than pyramids &c.
Travelling to Alex & back will take a big chunk of a three day trip. Stay in Cairo, there's more than enough of interest there.

I agree with the others. Best spend 3 days in Cairo and see everything you can. I spend 4 days in Cairo.... and I never got to see all the place I heard/wanted to see...and hence me returning next year. Alexandria is good too but just a bit too far away for a short period of time like this.

Have a great trip and chek out the tips on Cairo in VT..:)
