Hi evwryone. Heard some report of piracy off the east coast of malaysia in recent years. Does anyone know if this is true and if Tioman is affected?
Tioman is not affected. The only area where you might have a bit of it is in the strait between malaysian Borneo and the Philippines. Have a nice trip to Tioman. really lovely island.

I am not aware of incidents involving pirates in that area, but as mentioned there is some pirate activity (usually Philippine pirates) in the Sulu Sea, south east of Palawan and the area between Mindanao/Palawan and the island of Borneo.

Yes, there was a pirate incident in 2008, I believe. But these are not really pirates in the traditional sense, more like broke out-of-luck-fishermen-turned-opportunists.
They're not interested in booty like jewelry, gold etc Instead, they hijack any kind of vessel they can get their hands on and then dismantle these for spare parts, which they then flog off on their markets.
No Tioman tourists have ever been bothered by these thieves to my recollection, so no worries. :)
