Hi all, I will be visiting Puglia for 5 days with my mum at the beginning of September, flying into Bari. I am starting to research the trip so would love to hear any suggestions for things to do / places to see during this short break. We are currently interested in seeing some of the historic sites such as the Trulli in Alberobello, but also in enjoying the surrounding scenery including the beaches. We are looking for a relaxing break, rather than trying to squeeze everything in in one go! And we will be mostly travelling by public transport. Can anyone suggest an interesting itinerary? Thanks in advance and I will be sure to check through previous forum posts too!
this is such a lovely part of italy - i don't know it very well because i only spent a few days there i loved Lecce and stayed in a very nice b&b called Il Banane right in the centre of town which was as cheap as - it is small and has no website so best to ring them to book - number on my lecce page otranto is a charming seaside village with a wonderful cathedral and castle i was scared to check out the old quarter in bari - even in daylight because lonely planet warned against it - but now i wish i had because other VT members found it quite safe and agreeable

I agree with Craic that Otranto, Lecce in addition to the TRULLI without a doubt!, and with just 5 days via public transport, that will probably fill it up, as it seemed that the buses don't run all that frequently. You might want to consider a couple days car rental, especially to incude beaches. possibly someone else can fill in with better info?

A five day stay in northern Puglia to include Alberobello, Martina Franca, Grottaglie, Ostuni and the beaches on the east coast is one choice. A five day stay in southern Puglia to include Lecce, Gallipoli and the beaches on the west coast northwards from there, for instance Santa Maria al Bagno and Santa Caterina, would be another choice. Otranto, Nardo and Galatina are interesting places nearby. Happy travels R

Definitely go see Ostuni--it's absolutely beautiful-a hilltop town with views to the sea, and every building is painted white--just gorgeous! We also enjoyed walking along the cliffs at Polignano a Mare; many of the caves have restaurants in them--a great place for lunch or dinner. A definite must-see would be the Cave of Castellana Grotte. We had no problem walking around Old Bari during the day. If you are looking for a fabulous place to stay, we stayed at the resort of Una Hotel Regina in Noicattaro, about a mile from the beach at Torre a Mare. You could spend several days just enjoying the amenities of the hotel. We did not stay at the Agriturismo Lama San Giorgio in Rutigliano, but had a wonderful family reunion there and the food was so delicious! It looked like a very nice place to stay and all the reviews are great. I would also recommend Trani and Sassi di Matera. You will love Puglia!
