Hi, I'll be staying in Puerto Viejo for two months this summer (June-August). I'm wondering how to do my banking...can you just withdraw from a local ATM using a US debit card? Anyone have suggestions about how to access my funds without having to bring a lot of cash (which would be hazardous and not smart). Thanks!
There are ATMs that dispense both USD and CRC, but don't rely too heavily on them. They tend to run out of$, or lose power, phone....... A Visa debit card is accepted many places for purchase, limiting you need for cash. Travelers Checks are a no no. Very hard to cash, except at banks - long lines eat hours of you stay.

Puerto Viejo has a bank. I had a little US cash on me but used the ATM most of the time. The only ATM is at the bank as far as I noticed and the bank is just at the start of town. Let me know if you want any information about what to do and where to stay. I was there 3 years ago and it was my 1st solo trip. Loved it! Christy
