We have tickets on Spirit which flies into Toluca, Mexico and would like to use them to see a nephew get married in Puerto Vallarta in April. Is it safe to drive from Toluca to Puerto Vallarta? We were thinking of stopping off on the way, are there some interesting and safe places along the way? Who rents reliable cars in Toluca?
I've asked a friend that lives in PV part time. I know in the Baja the roads are in good shape but can be quite narrow. There's millions being spent to improve the Baja roads currently. As soon as he gets back to me I'll post the response. In the Baja, at least where I am located, Budget has become Fox rentalas but EruoCar seems to be doing most of the renting. The vehicles are not new but in general are in pretty good shape. Be certain to inspect the vehicle throughly and note any scrapes or dings before you sign or drive off. You'd be amazed at the number of issues that can "appear" when you return the vehicle. Toluca to PV is probably a 2+ day trip. If you're not familiar with driving in Mexico, do not drive at night. I'd plan to stop and spend some time in Guadalajara. Many of my neighbors have purchased their furniture there and had it shipped back to Loreto on the Ferry.

Auto rental can be expensive in Mexico, and Toluca's nowhere close to Puerto Vallarta. Flying into PV directly would probably be less expensive, overall. There are many interesting places between the two cities. They're well-detailed in the guidebooks and elsewhere here on VT member pages. Personally, I wouldn't drive in the state of Michoacan.
