Mosquito Bay - worth visiting in June?

      Vieques Apr 5, 2014 at 6:47 PM

We are planning to visit PR for a week, and want to visit either Vieques or Culebra for a couple of days. I heard on other sites that perhaps the bay is not glowing and no one knows why.

That said, if the main attraction in Vieques may not be visible in June, is Vieques still worth visiting or should we go to quieter Culebra instead?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Which part of PR should we stay?

Puerto Rico Apr 3, 2014 at 7:49 AM

Hi there! My boyfriend and I are looking to go to Puerto Rico in May. We will be using our HH Honors points and are having trouble deciding between the Hilton properties in comparison to which part of PR we should stay! We've narrowed it down to:

      • El San Juan Resort & Casino in the Isla Verde District
      • Caribe Hilton in Condado
      • El Conquistador Waldorf Astoria in Fajardo

A beachfront property with a pristine beach is a must -- shops, restaurants and night life not too far away would be ideal, but we're also extremely interested in snorkeling, bioluminescent bay, and horseback riding on the beach.

Has anyone stayed at these properties, or suggest which part of Puerto Rico might be most ideal for us? I'm thinking we'll definitely want to rent a car for everything we want to do. Any advise to help us plan a perfect romantic/fun/adventurous/relaxing/picturesque getaway is so greatly appreciated!

Walk from El Condado to Old San Juan?

San Juan Mar 10, 2014 at 3:23 AM

My family and I are big walkers - and enjoy wandering around from neighborhood to neighborhood in our native Chicago.
My question is it feasible to walk from El Condado to Old San Juan? I know there's buses and taxis, but am curious if its possible to walk it.

Are there safety issues in Condado/San Juan??

San Juan Feb 21, 2014 at 11:20 AM

Currently looking to book a trip to San Juan in April for my family and I (two adults and two young children). Are there any current safety concerns in Condado/Old San Juan. A Puerto Rican lady whom works with my wife made a comment about things being dangerous lately in PR, and put a scare into her - so I'm hoping someone with more familiarity than myself with this area can give more informative opinions on the matter.
      Thanks.

I'm seeing some info about evening wear in San Juan. What is acceptable daytime, "hanging out" attire? Will be spending first part of trip mostly around hotel because of business meetings, but not for spouses. What should I be packing for this time? When and where are shorts inappropriate for men or women? Thanks

      Puerto Rico on a budget?

Puerto Rico Feb 6, 2014 at 6:52 AM

On my last trip to Mexico, my boyfriend proposed, and so we are getting married this summer! :) We decided on Puerto Rico for the honeymoon and will be staying for a week in June. I just have a few questions, mostly relating to budget.

How much should I estimate for daily food cost? We definitely don't have champagne tastes but I know Puerto Rico can be expensive because it's a tourist destination. Any suggestions on good, inexpensive restaurants in San Juan?

What is the best way to experience the bioluminescent bays? We are planning to take a day trip to/through El Yunque and to Fajardo to see them, and I hear there are a few options--kayaking or boat tours (a little pricey) and I also hear you can experience them at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve (less expensive). However, it looks like they might not have any tours during our dates in June. Does anyone know if you can visit the Nature Reserve without being on a guided tour? I can't find much information on it.

In addition to the Fajardo/El Yunque day trip, we will also be taking one to Arecibo/Arecibo Observatory, and were considering one to Ponce as well. Mostly I would like to go to Ponce because I've heard really good things about Caja de Muertos Island. Has anyone been there? Would it be worth the day trip and the $50 ferry ride?

My last question has to do with transportation. Renting a car would be fairly inexpensive for the week (especially as cab rates seem pretty high--although I'm from the Midwest so maybe I just don't have much experience with them), and we will need one for at least two-three days for our day trips. However, it seems like parking is a big issue in San Juan and I know I saw some hotels charge $18/night for parking, which would defeat the savings in renting a car. How is the public transport in and around San Juan? I know there are buses, but are they affordable, and can they get you to all the main places? I'm thinking it might be a good option to take the bus while in San Juan and just rent a car for the days we will be going outside the city.

Lastly, if you can recommend any unique free or cheap things to do in San Juan, that would be great! I've already looked at tripadvisor and on VT but if you have any off-the-beaten-path recommendations that would be awesome.

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Isla de Vieques Feb 3, 2014 at 7:01 PM

My girlfriend and I booked passage to Vieques after visiting Culebra and wanting to go see for ourselves the bio bay and wild life preserve. We are now finding out there is a growing crime element on the island and becoming worried about how safe our stay will be. We are staying for at least a week and we are curious, how can we best avoid getting into trouble and simply enjoy each others company while experiencing as much solidarity as we possible?

Where in Puerto Rico? First timer....

Puerto Rico, Island of Jan 10, 2014 at 8:43 AM

My wife and I, with our 1.5 yo boy are planning a trip to Puerto Rico first week of June. It'll be a week long stay. I'd like the following in my trip:

      - Resort by the beach - Don't like it too crowded
      - Away from the hustle n bustle of city life
      - We'd like to do some excursions/activities (snorkeling, para sailing, sight seeing etc).

So my question is where would be the best place to stay and be able to do the above?

      Appreciate the help!

From the Dorado Embassy Hotel on Dorado del Mar Blvd, how many miles is it to walk to the downtown area, (Dorado Pueblo?)? How much distance to a pharmacy and a supermarket/grocery store? Is there any public buses? Where is the nearest taxi stand/hangout? Where is the best place to rent a reliable vehicle for a reasonable price? Any other related info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Will be arriving at the airport in SJU at 7:00 am. Any advice on which hotel to get (around $90 or less) that is close to beach and walking distance to old San Juan? DO hotels provide shuttle services?
If not, and I arrive at 7 am, how to get cheaply to San Juan (bus/taxi) and what should I do until it is check in time? I know most hotels would let you leave your bag ( I have a small backpack) until a room is available. Meanwile, what can I do as far as walk and look for things.
Finally, any suggestions on what to do in 4 days?
      Thanks in advance.
