Hello, I'll be in Puerto Montt for several days before heading to Punta Arenas. The cruise to Bariloche looks interesting but getting from Bariloche to Punta Arenas looks like a pricey pita. I was considering taking the cruise one way and the bus back to Puerto Montt. Any opinions, advice? Thanks in Advance, Jeff
No reason why you shouldn't do it. The bus/boat crossing (not really a cruise) takes a very full day, usually 12 hours from hotel to hotel, so you really want to take a break in Bariloche for a day or two at least. You can take the lake crossing from Puerto Varas as well, smaller and nicer than PM. See if you can get your return bus ticket from Bariloche in Puerto Montt before you go, or buy it when you arrive in Bariloche. The trip back by bus is usually about 5 hours to Osorno but can take much longer in summer with so many people using that pass.

the question is: how do you plan to get to punta arenas? are you flying or taking a boat from puerto montt? if so, then your plan is a good one. but if you are planning to arrive to punta arenas by road, you have to go via argentina no matter what as there are no roads in chile. so you might as well head south from bariloche.
