I have heard that you can catch your own oysters on the beach and eat them in Zeeland. Is this true? We are not overly fussed about catching them but would love to see an oyster farm and eat lots of oysters somewhere! Can anyone recommend a place? We will be travelling through Belgium and making our way up to the Netherlands so can stop into Zeeland if worthwhile. Thanks!
I would visit one of the following villages: Bruinisse, Yerseke, Veere or Sluis. The first 2 are fishing towns; the latter 2 have the better restaurants. PJ

Fortunately, oysters are very easy to catch, errr..., grab ;-) Lots of other seafood to try too.

Thanks so much for the info. Is there anywhere in particular that they might be able to show us how to catch the oysters? Also, would we need to register somewhere or get a license before we do it? If it is too hard to organise then we will just find a place to eat them. We would like to eat LOTS of them :) and enjoy them natural (does not have to be a fancy restaurant) - any places spring to mind? We are quite flexible on location at this stage so will make an effort to visit somewhere specific if it provides this. Many thanks, Linh and Simon (Australia)

Is there anywhere in particular that they might be able to show us how to catch the oysters? It's not really a catch; it's picking them up at the shore sides that are open to the public. As said in a previous answer: there is a limit of 10 kg per person. Areas that are being rented to the fishermen are not open to the public to get oysters! Also, would we need to register somewhere or get a license before we do it? This will prove too time comsuming for you; forget it If it is too hard to organise then we will just find a place to eat them. We would like to eat LOTS of them :) and enjoy them natural (does not have to be a fancy restaurant) - any places spring to mind? Go to the fishermen villages (Yerseke or Bruinisse) and get your oysters as fresh as you like. Happy oyster hunting, PJ

So, we have decided that Yerseke might be the better option, being closer to the mainland. Only problem is that Im finding it difficult to find trains or buses that run there from Brussels. What is the best way to get to Yerseke from Brussels if we dont have a car (and prefer not to drive)? Or is this even possible? Cheers, Linh

From Brussels take an Intercity train to Roosendaal. Change trains to the local train to the Kruiningen-Yerseke station. From there travel the last stretch by Connexxion bus #29 to Yerseke. PJ
