We live in suburban Canberra Australia. My wife has not been back to Gieten since about 40 or more years ago. We are thinking of doing a Tour around Europe in May 2005 - ending in Paris - catching the train to Amsterdam and then onto your area to see her old town and old sights. So what is the best way to do it? Trains, buses and how frequent are the services.
For train schedules: www.ns.nl (click the link English right at the top next to the search box). If you're coming for Paris, your train will most probably stop at Rotterdam Central. It's best if you get off there and take a train to Assen. You would make a bit of a detour if you go by Amsterdam. Rotterdam-Assen = 2 hrs 20 mins Rotterdam-Amsterdam = 1 hr 5 mins (normal train) Amsterdam- Gieten = 2 hrs Frequency on all tracks: several times per hour. From Assen it's only 18 kms to Gieten, by bus most likely. You'll be able to get all the info at Assen trainstation.

You can rent bicycle at most train stations. It all depends on your condition. As you come from a rural (and I assume quiet) area, it might be an option to think about. PJ
