Hello, I will be staying at the Iberostar Costa Dorado in May. I was wondering how to get transit without going through the resort. Usually resorts have higher taxi prices. Is there a bus stop or scooter pick up near the resort gate? Any reliable drivers or guides I could hire? Looking to visit Sosua, Isabel de Torres and Porta Plata Malecon. How far to Santiago de los Caballeros? What would be typical taxi fare? Any buses from Costa Dorado? Thanks, Merryway

I am travelling to Dominican Republic next week and will be staying in an All Inclusive hotel for two weeks, but I don't plan on taking too many clothes, and will basically be chilling within the hotel only (just need to rest and recuperate) but should I have spare baggage allowance, would love to bring some nice things for some local children... I have read that DR has some very poor areas, and whilst I don't have much spare cash, if coloring books / pencils / notebooks etc would help a local school, I'd be happy to oblige. Am I just being daft, or do you think this might make a difference to someone?! I got the idea from an advert for a website called "www.packforapurpose.org" but my hotel is not one of the 4 listed in DR on this website. What do you think?!

I'm reading a lot of conflicting reports on the distance (in time and mileage) between Santiago and Puerto Plata. We will need to make the journey a number of times on our trip and I'm trying to determine just how long it will take to take a bus between the two communities. Can anyone help me?

Hi. I am thinking about renting a vehicle when I visit the DR, but I hear that the drivers are maniacs and don't follow the rules of the road. Was this just to scare me off from driving, or is it true? My longest trip would be from Puerto Plata to Semana. Do I dare? Any suggestions? Thanks

Hello All, I will be travelling DR for a week Dec 14. I am travelling alone and just had some gen questions. I am a single guy, so I am looking for night life, bars etc. It seems from previous posts that Sousua is the place to be (?) Can anyone recommend any 'decent' hotels. I'm hearing the Waterfront is pretty good/cheap. Is the layout such that one could walk from place to place or is a cab/bus needed? Is it worth it to find a good cabbie and pay him to show me around? (If this is the case, can anyone recommend someone?) I was also considering a cpl nights in Sousa and some time in Puerta Plata as well. I'd like to mingle with the locals, and not looking for the AI/tourist experience. All help on the above is greatly appreciated.

Hello, We'll be in a resort around Puerto Plata next week and since my wife is pregnant and has had a history of pregnancy problems, we wanted to be ready to fly back to the US if an emergency arises. So I've been trying to figure out what flights back to the US are available. Vamos a estar en un hotel de Puerto Plata la semana que viene, y ya que mi esposa esta embarazada y ha tenido problemas con embarazos en el pasado, queriamos estar preparados si alguna emergencia pasa. Asi que estaba tratando de averiguar que vuelos van desde Puerto Plata a los Estados Unidos. So far these are the only 3 daily flights that I've been able to research / Estos son los 3 vuelos diarios que he encontrado: Continental, 1:10pm, New York, 4 hrs Jetblue, 2:50pm, New York, 4 hrs American Airlines, 4:30pm, Miami, 2hrs Do you know if there's other flights from POP to anywhere in the US, or is there another big nearby airport? Hi there, we're staying at the Sun Village Resort in Puerto Plata and would love to get out of the resort and actually experience some "real" Dominican Republic, not just a pretty beach in a fancy resort but also some cultural and historical aspects of the Dominican Republic. We're there for a week. It seems a little difficult to get out of the resort, as there's nothing around. I'm sure the resort people would be happy to get us a taxi for a 500% markup, but I'll pass on that. And I'm not a big fan of being hauled around with 20 other clueless tourists in a big bus to carefully selected manicured locations and shops. What would you recommend? Hire a taxi for a day? How can I get a taxi that is not doing a kickback to the resort? How much might that be? Where should/could we go? It's myself, my wife and our 2-yr old toddler. He's a pretty good traveller and has already been to 9 countries in his 2-yrs of life so we'll enjoy most things within reason. Oh yes, and I'm fluent in Spanish (native speaker) so not too worried about the language. Thanks! Carlos

Iv booked this hotel for may next year as the beach and hotel looked amazing im a single parent with two young children so dont need a lively place full of nightlife has anyone been to this hotel , can you tell me if theres enough things to do , iv heard they have kids clubs , kids pool , babysitting etc also heard the food is okay if anyone is going may next year 2010 id love to hear from you aswel
