We'll rent a car and our planned trip will go from Santiago de Cuba via Bayamo to Las Tunas. We'd curious to visit the landscape of Sierra Maestre. Do we get impressions by simply drive through? Or is it necessary to take a tour from Villa Islazul de Santo Domingo for instance to Commandancia General de la Plata? What a about a lmirador to spot Pico Turquino?
If simply driving through is not possible or not satisfactory enough, we deliberate to make a day tour to Gran Parque National Sierra Maestra. To climb up Pico Turquino is certainly too exhausting for us but a tour to Commandancia general de la Plata could be doable. How long does it take? Where and at which time we'd have to start? Or are there any other recommendable day tours?
I plan 2-3 weeks low budget escapade in Cuba this year (16th November - 3rd December) all the way down to Santiago de Cuba, including 3/4 days trekking in Sierra Maestra (Comandancia la Plata - Pico Turquino / Pico de Cuba trail to Las Cuevas).
Just wonder now if there’s anyone having similar plans i.e. willing to join me en route or has recently done this, so I could gather some useful info regarding the accomodation, logistics & arrangements necessary to organize it in Bayamo / Villa Santo Domingo?
Any advice & suggestions are very welcomed :)
I wonder if the area around El Pico is open now to hikers? I realize when open it is with escort.Has anyone made this trek lately? Thanks
We will be returning to Marea on Dec 1st. While there last year, Manuel said he needed a tire and tube for his sons bike. I'm thinking it was 20". If anyone is coming or going before we do, please advise.
