      Butchart Gardens in a Day

Vancouver Island May 11, 2013 at 6:32 PM

We are planning a RV trip to BC this summer and want to go to Butchart Gardens. We will be taking a ferry from Anacortes, WA and want to make sure we will have enough time to see the gardens with travel time included. We have to small dogs that would be staying behind for the day or perhaps put into a kennel if we need more time. Would it be more economical and better to take our car or take a bus/cab or rent a car on the island? Can we do it in a day? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Vancouver Island May 7, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Hi, my husband, our 4 year old daughter and myself are thinking about a trip to west Canada (from Ireland). We teach so have July and most of August off work. Although we have loads of time, we would be doing it on a shoe string!! Would like to know what people think; should we a) just focus on Vancouver and Vancouver Island (b) focus on the Rockies © try to do both - although I don't think we could afford it all at once!
We really want to get the 'real Canada' outdoorsy feel and would be staying in hostels (hopefully there are child-friendly ones about!!) any advice/opinions on what we should/could do?

    • Which route to Niagara Falls?

Sault Sainte Marie Apr 25, 2013 at 3:17 PM

Hi, I will be driving from Madison Wisconsin to Niagara Falls in June and will be crossing the border at Sault Ste Marie. I would really appreciate some advice on the following: For an overnight stay which would you recommend, the usa or ontario side of the border? What route would you recommend for the onward journey? Is there a route that includes a car ferry crossing? 13 years ago I did a long drive around the great lakes and I remember taking a car ferry but cannot remember where from or where it arrived (across part of lake huron maybe?) I do remember really enjoying that ferry trip though and would love to find it again to enjoy with my children. I seem to recall spending a few hours on a lovely beach after the ferry crossing. Any clues and recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

My father Thomas 'Peter' Howard, as a young man spent a year by the Qu'appelle river growing grain on the quarter section held by his uncle Richard John Everall, so that 'Jack' could return home to Shropshire to visit his family. He sowed, cultivated and harvested the grain which he took to numbered bins by the railway line where it was picked up and taken East, and he received a cheque in due course. He was quite alone for this time, but was welcome in a neighbouring home presided over by 'Granny" Wilson who I believe was Scots. She encouraged him to do a world tour, and gave the name of relatives by marriage, Idiens in New South Wales in Australia. He did do so and kept a diary, but sadly, we have had to rely on verbal memories for his Canadian time. He passed through on his homeward journey, but broke his journey further west at Swift Current where he worked during the winter of 1929/30 for a man called Lundqist at a line camp I think. He said the 'tumbleweeds' were mustard plants. Mrs Everall, born Mary Ann Howard in Bishops Castle in 1863, did not linger long in the area, but if anyone has news of her, I'd be glad to know of it. Does any of this tally with any records at the museum or memories of an oldest inhabitant? He said that the young tended to pick up their sticks and move to more favourable places, but I see that this area like many others has gained residents in the intervening period. Someone may have a letter or a memory of the period. Anything about the Wilsons or the Everalls would be very interesting.

      Cheaper accommodations - Inns

      Saskatoon Feb 10, 2010 at 9:30 PM

v's larger hotels. Anyone know about Confederation Inn, or The Westgate Inn? Both along 22nd St W & Circle Drive W They're definately a lot cheaper than hotels like, say, Days Inn or Country Inn & Suites. But is it worth it? I wouldn't be spending a lot of time there & extra comforts (found in more expensive hotels) aren't a priority. But then I don't want to stay in a dive either! I just want a comfy bed, a clean room, hot water and a feeling of safety. I'll have a car too, so distance to things won't be a problem. So just wondering if anyone knows of & can give an opinion on these two places. Much appreciated,

    • Nearly five hours to waste in Regina...what to do, what to do?

      Regina Jul 25, 2007 at 1:56 PM

Hey there; I'm taking a Greyhound to Toronto, and my trip sees me stopping in Regina for nearly five hours. So...the good question is...what to do? This stopover is from 4:00pm to 8:50pm...that gives me plenty of time to spend, exploring, at least, the downtown core. What I'd probably want to find is a health club (like the YMCA) so that I can have a quick work out and shower...and maybe a quick bite to eat. A coffee shop with wifi access would be great, or a cyber cafe, so that I can check my email, as well. Or an arcade with DDR, so that I can expend some extra energy. Who knows? Even a coffee date just for the heck of it? Who's to say? It's all good and fun, my planned trip is for the middle of August. I haven't nailed down a date yet, but that's forthcoming. Thanks for reading, and thank you in advance for responding. Yours sincerely, Dizzle
