My father Thomas 'Peter' Howard, as a young man spent a year by the Qu'appelle river growing grain on the quarter section held by his uncle Richard John Everall, so that 'Jack' could return home to Shropshire to visit his family. He sowed, cultivated and harvested the grain which he took to numbered bins by the railway line where it was picked up and taken East, and he received a cheque in due course. He was quite alone for this time, but was welcome in a neighbouring home presided over by 'Granny" Wilson who I believe was Scots. She encouraged him to do a world tour, and gave the name of relatives by marriage, Idiens in New South Wales in Australia. He did do so and kept a diary, but sadly, we have had to rely on verbal memories for his Canadian time. He passed through on his homeward journey, but broke his journey further west at Swift Current where he worked during the winter of 1929/30 for a man called Lundqist at a line camp I think. He said the 'tumbleweeds' were mustard plants. Mrs Everall, born Mary Ann Howard in Bishops Castle in 1863, did not linger long in the area, but if anyone has news of her, I'd be glad to know of it. Does any of this tally with any records at the museum or memories of an oldest inhabitant? He said that the young tended to pick up their sticks and move to more favourable places, but I see that this area like many others has gained residents in the intervening period. Someone may have a letter or a memory of the period. Anything about the Wilsons or the Everalls would be very interesting.
End of December, I'm going to be making a circular road trip with a friend through Saskatchewan. We are going to visit some mutual friends, but wondering if there's any recommended stops along the way. Generally we'll be driving Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat back to Edmonton. Are there any stops along the way or detours anyone recommends?
I am planning a one way train trip from Dresden to Krakow. I want to stopover in Gorlitz and Wroclaw. I understand that Polish trains are cheaper than German ones. Therefore, should I buy a ticket from Dresden to Gorlitz, then a separate ticket from Zgorzelec to Wroclaw? Also is the Gorlitz trainstation different to the Zgorzelec station? Any help would be much appreciated.
v's larger hotels. Anyone know about Confederation Inn, or The Westgate Inn? Both along 22nd St W & Circle Drive W They're definately a lot cheaper than hotels like, say, Days Inn or Country Inn & Suites. But is it worth it? I wouldn't be spending a lot of time there & extra comforts (found in more expensive hotels) aren't a priority. But then I don't want to stay in a dive either! I just want a comfy bed, a clean room, hot water and a feeling of safety. I'll have a car too, so distance to things won't be a problem. So just wondering if anyone knows of & can give an opinion on these two places. Much appreciated,
Hi from New Zealand My daughter and her husband from New Zealand will be living in Regina next Jan, Feb and March. As it is a work secondment their accommodation is provided. Hi people, I've just booked 3 days in Regina for a stopover enroute to the East coast of Canada in August, I'm thinking i'll go to the RCMP Museum but is there anywhere else i shouldnt miss? Is Regina really as bad safety/crime wise as people say or is it all being blown out of proportion? Cheers Cam

Hi, I am in Saskatoon for 2 month and I don't want to hang around all the time in the city. So do you have any suggestions where I should go for fishing and hiking ? Planed to hire a car (Do you know a good one in town?) to drive around. Because of my work here I think a drive up to 4 hours would be ok for me. thanks.
Could someone please advise us as to a good hotel in Regina that is affordable, clean and close to the RCMP depot?
looking at doing a road trip through the states and into canada. Would love to be amongst the snow, but want to avoid road closures, or the need of chains. I was wondering what time of year is best to do this? As I am inquiring from australia, please give a month period, rather than season.
Hey there; I'm taking a Greyhound to Toronto, and my trip sees me stopping in Regina for nearly five hours. So...the good question is...what to do? This stopover is from 4:00pm to 8:50pm...that gives me plenty of time to spend, exploring, at least, the downtown core. What I'd probably want to find is a health club (like the YMCA) so that I can have a quick work out and shower...and maybe a quick bite to eat. A coffee shop with wifi access would be great, or a cyber cafe, so that I can check my email, as well. Or an arcade with DDR, so that I can expend some extra energy. Who knows? Even a coffee date just for the heck of it? Who's to say? It's all good and fun, my planned trip is for the middle of August. I haven't nailed down a date yet, but that's forthcoming. Thanks for reading, and thank you in advance for responding. Yours sincerely, Dizzle

Hello Everyone, Well I am going to visit the lovely Saskatoon in July and looking forward to it from what you all say in the tip pages etc. You are all in the know, so tell me if you think Westjet will have a fantastic seat sale after I buy my flights from Toronto to Sask this week ( I am looking at Canada Jazz airline) - raise your hands if you think I should hold off for a while (get those crystal balls out) It is crazy to think I can get from Belfast in NI to Toronto cheaper - anyway... The next thing is, do any of you have brilliant insight into Car Hire in Saskatoon - I need to get a car/ big car to fit 6 of us and luggage and head to Yorkton. Any advice would be great. Looking forward to tasting those berries. Love Traveldi x
Hello everyone, Lots of advice would be greatly appreciated! My patner and myself have been looking into moving to saskatchewan, he will be doing long haul driving, so I am looking for a nice area for myself and my three year old son to live (and feel safe) whilst he is away. I wil hopefully be going to the uni of sask, so would like to live in a nice area near to the uni, that wont take me too long to drive there each day, also i would need a nice primary school for my son. Some general questions also...I am still young ;o) so would like to know about nightlife, shopping (the clothing type!), restaurants and that kind of thing. From what i've seen saskatchewan looks like a very nice place to live but would greatly appreciate your thoughts...many thanks.XxX
Hi, as a family we are moving to Saskatoon this Summer from just outside Manchester, England. I am trying to find the best way to transport my 2 dogs from Calgary to Saskatoon. Air, train or road I don't care. Does anyone knonw of an Airline that will take them, West Air won't as they are over the size permitted. Canada Air won't for the same reason. Is there a train that runs between the two places? Is it feasible to drive? Please I need some HELP!! Thanks
My freinds and I would like to travel to Reginia for a "Girl's weekend". Where are some fun places to go? Nighclubs that are not stripper clubs would be our choice. A place for drinking and dancing with the young crowd. Any suggestions?

I am moving to Saskatoon for university from calgary and am looking to buy a house in the Riversdale area. I have heard from some people that Riversdale is a bit of a seedy area. Could someone tell me if this Area is really that bad? And also What types of problems does this community have, is it poverty, crime ? . What areas would you recommend to buy in that are in the same price ranges of this area
Hi VT colleagues! Can anybody tell me what the best way/road and faster from Regina to Vancouver is? Thanks.
Hi, can anyone recommend a cheap place to stay in Saskatoon this summer for three weeks - the last week in June until mid July. Thanks in advance!
I am new to Saskatoon and would like to know if there are bars or clubs that play dance music that would be suitable for a 32 year old male. I don't want to clubs that have predominantly 19 year old women. Also any other places that you could recommend to meet people would be great.
Hello, at present myself and my family live in the UK, however my husband has been offered a job driving trucks throughout the United States and Canada but based in Saskatoon. Obviously this is a big move. If anyone can help what are the average wages for a truck driver, do they earn good money? Is 50 to 60 thousand dollars a year a good wage out there. Also we have 3 children and I would like to know what the education standards are like out there. I apolgise for all the questions but we are trying to find out as much as we can before we make the decision to emigrate. Thanks in advance.
