Getting around

by Paulie52 Online Now Sep 30, 2005 at 6:02 AM

If anyone has any tips for traveling around Palawan, I would appreciate hearing from you... I'm flying to Puerta Princesa in a month, but after that, I don't have much in the way of plans. Would like to get up to El Nido & Coron, but don't know how long it takes to get between these spots. Would like to avoide spending several days on buses. Any ideas out there? Thanks! Paul

Puerto Princesa to EL Nido or Busuanga/Coron is 20 minutes by plane and 8-10 hours of bumpy bus ride.

Thanks, Aimees. I think I am going to go out on a limb and go for the bus ride. Perhaps I will get to see a bit of countryside. In retrospect, perhaps I should have booked a ticket into Nido direct from Manilla then flown back either from Coron or Puerta Princesa... In either event, really looking forward to getting down there and seeing some fantastic seascapes!

I also remember the bus ride from Puerto Princessa to Port Barton was quite bumpy. Although the distance was not long, it took so many hours. But yes, you can see a lot of coutryside. And it is beautyful and natural, the ricefields, buffalos and local people. If interested, we have some pictures about Philippines (taken in Palawan, Boracay and Manila) www.pbase.com/kersti/philippines

Hello. Went to Palawan this past June and took the bus from Puerto Princesa to El Nido. There were two buses, one was called Eullen Joy (whitish colored bus), and Sweety (green). Going to El Nido, we rode on the Eullen Joy and it took us I think 10-11 hrs. The bus was overcrowded, and stopped a lot to pick and drop passengers. My butt hurts for a few days. :). And it broke down a few times. Going back to Puerto Princesa to from El Nido, some of the locals told us that the Sweety bus is fast, and they were right. It took us I think 7-8 hrs. Plus with the Sweety bus, you need reservation, so it was a little less crowded and stopped less than the Eullen Joy bus. Plus it did not broke down. The long ride was all worth it though. There is this company there in El Nido that offer tours/island hopping for 400-450 pesos a day. Free lunch. Don't miss the option/tours (they have three options-A,B,C- with each covering different islands). Don't miss the tour that included the Snake Island. I won't tell you more, but that island is the best. I forgot the name of that company, it's run by a Swiss lady. It has a store and a restaurant on the 2nd floor. The staff are very friendly and accomodating. PS: back when we were there, they were doing a lot of road construction/paving the road from around Roxas to El Nido, hopefully by this time some of them are done. Less bumpy for you u know what. :)

Thermopilas, great tip on "Sweety." I will definitely find that bus for the trip up. Definitely planning on doing the island hopping day trips while in Nido. I am trying to find a water/beachfront bungalow for the stay there in Nido... if you have any tips on that, all pointers are welcome!
