Any suggestions for a day tour?

A friend and I are planning to have a day trip outside of Manila. Looking at Laguna or Caliraya for a day visit. We will just be taking the public transport. Is it safe to travel in those areas? If ever we get stranded in that place, are the accommodations reasonable? Thanks!
