Not exactly sure where to post this, so trying the Alberta Forum. Going to be arriving in Jasper by the train, then picking up a rental car the next day. We will be driving about Jasper National Park, and also into Yoho, Banff and Kootenay, and perhaps others. Do we need a Parks Canada Pass? Is that something that the rental agency would already have for the car? We're booked at hotels in Jasper and Banff, so not camping. It's been a long time since I was in the parks, so don't remember what was required. Suggestions please.
last time I went to banff there was a toll both at the entrance to the park where you could buy your pass. I'm sure that there is one on the jasper side too.

I've always driven, so bought them at the park entrances. You can also order passes online at the Parks Canada website; often annual passes are cheaper if you are spending more than a few days in the parks. pc.gc.ca/eng/kiosk/index/dp....

Thank you for your replies. Think I'll have to query the car rental to see if they have a pass - there must be something when we're actually picking up the rental car within the park boundaries. I do appreciate you taking time to answer my question - VTers are a great source of assistance and information!!!

Hi! Yes you will need a Nat'l Parks pass. You can purchase park passes at the information centre in Jasper (on Connaught, the main street). There are also parks pass booths on the Icefield Parkway, just south of Jasper and just north of Lake Louise (they seem to move those; I see them in slightly different spots every year, I think ? :)). Banff (the town) also has an information centre that will sell parks passes. I don't think you will have trouble finding a place to purchase one. It may be that the car rental can give more information and even arrange a pass for you (however I don't know because we live close enough to the mountain parks that we drive our own vehicle, and we visit the parks often enough that we purchase an annual pass every year). Hope this helps.

I did check with Parks Canada directly, and we will order the passes before we go - although we don't need one for Kluane Park in the Yukon. I appreciate your suggestions of where to get the passes. Am reall looking forward to seeing the parks again - such a wonderful part of Canada (a country we are blessed to have many wonderful parts!)
