We are planning to travel to Progreso mid-Feb. We may rent a villa on the beach. Has anyone travelled during that time of year to that area? Is it warm enough to swim and mostly is the sea good for swimming? As well, do you think we would need a car or taking cabs and public buses good enough for traveling around the area and sightseeing?
Progreso has a great public transportation system - buses, vans, and inexpensive taxis. The water is shallow and safe - no rip tides. The average water temperature in February is 66 °F - which, for we locals, is freezing. Our Northern visitors think it's great!

Like TelchacSusan said, the locals like us are much more susceptible to the 'cool' weather but the folks from up north are running around with no shirts and frolicking in the waves! If you are in Progreso, transportation is fairly easy with buses, taxis and so forth. If you are looking for a nicer beach, with less people, more sand, more privacy and the chance to see flamingos flying overhead in the mornings and afternoons, you should look at places towards Chichxulub-Uaymitun or even Telchac. For those places, transportation is a little more sporadic and you should have a car if you're planning to tour around. Hope this helps!

Don't go. Simple as that. We were robbed of things from our house rental on the beach in early evening. We were out and they found a way in. Everything was locked but they still got in. Our friend were robbed last year from a rental on the beach and we heard someone else was robbed a day after we were robbed. I am sure many more people have been robbed as well. We were also hastled by the Federales and were asked for money on the way to a cenote. Friends of ours two different groups were hastled as well and ended up paying 1000 pesos each last week. Don't go. Believe me you will be disappointed.
