Buses

We are struggling with whether to rent a car or take the buses during our trip to Progreso May 24 through 31. Do you....or anyone...have info on private drivers ?

It sort of depends on what you are planning to do and where you are renting. We have stayed a month at a time in Progreso/Chixculub without renting a car. The buses rumble by every 10/15 minutes until 10pm. Getting into town or to a restaurant is convenient and cheap by bus.

However, we did rent a car for a few days to drive to some of the nearby ruins (Uxmal, Dzibilchaltun, etc.). You would have to take the bus into Merida and rent the car from there.

We also hired a private driver for three hours one day to drive us into a large grocery store in Merida and back (before they built the big store in Progreso. The price was something like 800 pesos ($80), so we only did that once (renting a car costs approx40 a day).

You can go to the main square in town and hire a van or taxi for specific trips or just for the day. Be sure to negotiate! The bus service into Merida and back is excellent, and then you can take buses from there. You might want to rent a car for a few days, and use public transport for the rest.
