Best Way to Get from Bitola to Meteora

      Greece Aug 18, 2015 at 9:32 AM

I will be in Bitola in October with two work colleagues. We will be all over Republic of Macedonia on our visit but I know these two guys will absolutely love Meteora and I would like to try to get there for two days / one night when we're in the area.
From Bitola, what would you suggest as the best way to do this?
I was thinking of taking a taxi from Bitola to the border, then a Greek taxi to Florina. From there, though ...

I see a network of three buses as an option (risky, though, with timetables could add a lot of time and if you miss one you're stuck).
Can I rent a car in Florina (which would be helpful once at Meteora)?
Could I lengthen the taxi route once inside Greece to a town where I could rent a car?

Since we have only two days, we'd have to avoid a long detour to, say, Thessaloniki, in order to make this happen. It would be a real treat for my companions, though, so if we can pull it off I'd like to give it a try.

      Thanks for your help.

      A few days in Milos

      Greece Aug 2, 2015 at 11:32 AM

We plan to visit some Aegean islands in September. Can we see interesting rock formations and colors in Milos, staying there a few days and renting a car? We can take boat tours if there are any after the main season, but not take a boat for self-sailing.

How many days should I plan? We think of going by ferry to Santorini, and probably end in Crete - where we always go.

Arrange myself or use an agent?

      Greece Aug 30, 2015 at 8:18 AM

We're just buying tickets to Greece (Aegean) for about two and a half weeks, from September 10th. Planning to visit Milos and Santorini, and then Crete which is our usual destination in Greece.

We always arrange our trips ourselves, and never used a travel agent. I've been reading Matt Barrett's websites since I've got internet, maybe 1997, and never used his advice of arranging the trip through a travel agent. This time we have several islands with different transportation connections, is it a good idea of using an agent, maybe this time with the elections in the middle, and I don't know which strikes?

We've been in Greece in the past at election times, and several strikes.

      what's it like now?

      Rethymno May 26, 2005 at 4:21 AM

i spent a year in rethymnon in 1987/1988. i taught english at the paragioudakis frontisterion and stayed in a rent room in the old part of the city. my reminiscinces are that although the place was lovely, the winter was pretty grim (wet & windy - just like my native brighton). i used to spend most of my time with the other ex-pats at the why not? bar, sunshine bar, sunset bar (round the city wall), and tasos restaurant on the front, stelios restaurant near the town hall, together with the occasional visit to plakias and georgiopolis.

are any of these places still going? i loved it in the summer, and also the students i taught.

Rent Rooms Sea Front: Know anything about it?

Of all the budget hotels in Rethymnon, the only one I can find a valid email address or web site for is Rent Rooms Sea View. For 35 Euros a night it seems like a good deal, though there's no way for me to compare that price to others in town because they are apparently not connected to the internet in any way. If anyone knows anything about this place I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks. Here's the web site they have: rethymnoatcrete.com/seafront...

Hotel recommendation? How long should I stay?

      Rethymno Mar 28, 2005 at 8:22 AM

After seeing Knossos and the archeological museum in Heraklion, I plan to take the bus to Rethymnon and spend at least one night there before driving down to Plakias for a few nights and then to the southwest part of Crete for the remainder of my visit. I will probably arrive in Rethymnon in the evening. Can someone recommend a good but inexpensive hotel there?

Also, is one night enough in Rethymnon or should I stay a second night so I can spend a full day there before heading south? I don't want to be in too big of a hurry, but I also don't want to miss anything if it's worth staying longer. Normally I would not try planning things like this but I need to know when to have my rental car reserved. Thanks.

      Elafonissos

Prefecture of Rethymno May 19, 2003 at 11:33 AM

How long would it take to drive from Chania to Elafonissos? From past experience on Crete, I've learned never to try and figure distances based on klms. Last time I drove the dirt road to Preveli beach... only six km which took about 2 hours and it was such a disappointment to find out at the end of the road that I still had to climb the mountain to get over the other side (which I didn't) or pay the ferryman a handsome sum to take me there (which I also didn't as I hadn't thought to bring enough money with me...) Is Elafonissos worth the trip? Any other must see places en route? Thanks in advance!

      Local paper for jobs/housing?

Prefecture of Rethymno May 19, 2003 at 11:28 AM

Hello all Could someone inform me if there is a local paper in Rethymno which carries job and accommodation adverts? If so, which is its day of circulation? We will be down in Rethymnon next week 27-30/5/03 to attend an interview but I would like to make good use of my time and try to arrange a couple more job interviews. Any idea of the cost of living in Rethymnon? I.e. how much to rent a dyari (one bed flat), how much to budget for food and utilities, and so on? I hope there will be some students there with up to date information or some foreigner workers with great tips! Awaiting your comments... :)
