Using my i phone in Europe .

by sylv2 Online Now Jul 28, 2012 at 2:53 PM

My phone is unlocked and I have looked up plans if I put a new sim card in my phone but it is very confusing. If anyone can recommend a company or plan I can do further research. We are bringing our i pad but think having our phone with all it's great information and Internet capability in case we get lost ?or want to find something while out and about. Would be good. We were going to just stay in contact with family through email and we have Skype on the i pad but our phone would also be good. Thanks

Firstly, is the phone quad-band (GSM), because otherwise, it won't work in Europe at all ("unlocked" only means it is not tied to a particular service provider. Secondly, I don't think you want a "plan" (contract) so much as a prepaid SIM purchased locally, that you can top up as necessary. But will you only be in the Czech Republic?

Sorry I didn't see that in the title (but not in the question) you said iphone, in which case no technical problem. Only the issue of where you want to be able to make local calls and receive data services - although you could do the latter using wifi...

We will be in Netherlands, Hungry, Germany and Austria. We were thinking of a pre paid but not sure which companies provide these or do we just go to a shop which will sell us a pre paid sim? Thanks

Hi, We decided to unlock an old phone we had and used it in Canada and Europe. Worked like a charm with the local SIM card installed. It might be cheaper to get a SIM card from each country. We were just in Europe (Austria/Vienna, the Czech Republic/Prague) and purchased a SIM card for use in each individual country. I think we paid €10 for the basic "plan" which allowed us to make/receive international calls as well as make local calls. Best of luck spartan
