Day trip to Cesky Krumlov from Prague

by tracyskf Online Now Jul 17, 2012 at 9:15 PM

Hi, this is a follow up question to my earlier question on Cesky Krumlov from Prague. Trying to decide Option 1 or 2, this is for next month - mid August. =) Option 1 By public transport - Train timing does not work for us as by the time we reach it is afternoon and I understand that the train stop too far away from city. Any idea can we pre-purchase the bus tickets for return trip? Is this 3-4 hour journey??? If there is a website to purchase ticket, please do share. - If we do a DIY, how much time to allocate for Castle and city? For the Castle is it advisable to pre-purchase ticket? If so, which tour is recommended for us to go with? - Is it best to go on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday? These are either of the 3 days I can do the day trip. Option 2 By tour - This will no doubt be hassle free for us (2 pax). However, understand journey is about 3 hours per way, and the full day trip mentioned 10 hours. - Anyone have any experience going with a tour company? Looking for views how much really can be seen / done within the 10 hours? - Any good tour company to recommend? Looking for preferably good reviews and also small groups. Hope someone can share. Thanks! =)

Hi, Train is unpractical - you have to change/wait and station is on the outskirts. The fastest and easiest way is to take "Student Agency" bus (it is just name of the comapny): http://www.studentagency.eu/ They operate good quality buses and have only one stop on route- it is fastest possible. Depending on how early you go there you can spend in Cesky Krumlov around 6 or more hours - I did this kind of trip a couple years ago. Consult: zamek-ceskykrumlov.eu/tour-r... for info on tours. Routes of Tours No 1 and 2 do not overlap so you have to decide which one is more interesting to you (or maybe you want to take both). No free-lance exploration of interiors is allowed. Some tours might get sold out for time slots of your interest so either buy tickets first thing after arrival or buy on-line earlier. Tours start at different meeting points in the castle, not at tikets offices - make sure You know where to wait for a guide at set time! My guess is that Friday might be less crowded so probably would be better day for visit.

Hi We picked up a tour next to the old square behind the Clock, and found it most enjoyable, we saw all the main points and had a good guide, yes it was about 2-3 hours to get there, but everything was contained and the driver did come back quicker, nice vist to the church of the sculls and bonesas well plus castle etc no extra cost.

r13 Your reply is very helpful! I checked out "student agency" website. I need to ask which specific stop is it to take. There are a few "praha" and "cesky krumlov" - I want to make sure I have got the right one. Do you think it is overly ambitious to take the first bus there and last bus back? Do we get on the bus the same stop we arrive at Cesky Krumlov? I tried to click on the google map location of the Praha stop, find it hard to get my bearings. I will be staying at Betlémské náměstí Praha-Old Town, wonder if you know if it's walkable to the bus stop and how far? geordieontour Do you remember the tour company you went with? Is it a on a big bus or small group? I prefer going with small group if doing the tour instead of DIY. Thanks guys! =)

There are several bus terminals in Prague depending on the bus route. Bus to Cesky Krumlov leaves from "Na Knizeci" terminal (located at the south exit from metro B station "Andel" - you do not have choice here. It is possible to walk there from Betlemske namesti, but tram is faster (presumably You will walk all day in CK). In Cesky Krumlov there are two stops- "Spicak" (first on arrival to CK) which is somewhat closer to the Castle and "AN - autobusove nadrazi" (bus terminal, last stop). From the terminal you have to walk trough the old city to the castle which is further away. I suggest to take "Spicak" but bus terminal stop can be used as well. At the time I was there, bus was picking up passengers from both stops. I would certainly take first bus to Cesky Krumlov. Choice of the bus back really depends on Your stamina/plans. I took bus around 5 p.m.

I have come to a decision after much research - taking the first bus and leaving possibly 5 or 7 PM. =) Thanks everyone for your responses. I hope to get some further advice in terms of getting to the bus stop. I will be staying near the metro stop in Narodni trida - because we are taking the morning bus (6 AM), how possible is it to get to Andel prior about 5.30-ish? Is tram the same as the metro? Also need some pointers on what to do while we are at Cesky Krumlov - figure out we'll spend almost 2-3 hours at the castle itself. What else to see / do and is it easy to walk around? Many thanks!

Complication is - "Narodni trida" metro station was closed recently due to the building construction. That means you have to either walk to "Mustek" (or Karlovo Namesti") metro station (it might be close depending on your precise location) or take tram. Tram No 9 goes to Andel - travel time 7 minutes. I suggest to check the departure times on the official transportation web-page: www.dpp.cz Here is pictures and map of the bus terminal: jizdenky.studentagency.cz/cs... Getting to the bus terminal from metro is more straightforward - just take south exit to the surface ("forward" direction when arriving from Mustek), walk to the last stairs to the left. Departure terminal No 1. Tram No 9 arrives to Plzenska street - 2 blocks away. You have to walk along Stroupeznickeho street (to the left in front of the tram stop) to reach terminal. In Cesky Krumlov lots depends on the weather. First plan the lunch - keep in mind that there are many groups touring there and restaurants will be full during peak hours. There are nice streets in the down town which is really small and walkable. If the weather is nice there are several cafes on the bank of the river where You can relax. Walk around the park. In there is unique theater where decorations are set in the park and the public sits on the special turning construction - for the change of the Act construction turns and You are facing different direction where the play continues.... Also need some pointers on what to do while we are at Cesky Krumlov - figure out we'll spend almost 2-3 hours at the castle itself. What else to see / do and is it easy to walk around?

r13, thanks! That is very helpful with the links. The picture of how the bus stop look like can be very handy given there might not be people to ask so early in the morning (before 6 AM) and it might keep me wondering if I was a the correct place! In summary, its best to take a Metro instead of Tram right - and I should head to the Andel stop which is a more straight forward option. Please confirm that I got it right. Thanks! =) Tracy

Yes, metro is better as it is more frequent than tram No 9 early in the morning and walk to the bus terminal is shorter. I think You should plan arrival around 5:45. Metro from Mustek to Andel takes 5 minutes, departures each 10 minutes in the morning. Mustek metro station has several entrances, for example the one on the junction of Perlova, Narodni and Jungmannova streets might be close enough to Your hotel. As I already mentioned "Narodni Trida" metro station is closed.
