3 days in Prague...what should I not miss?

by hygenius Online Now Apr 7, 2011 at 1:10 AM

I will be traveling through and staying in Prague for about 3 days. Any recommendations on where to stay, day tours, and other "must sees" are greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Hi The usual answer: have a look on the Prague travel pages as a starting point. Perhaps start with the highest rated pages, but also try and find authors whose interests and perspective seem to mirror your own(since you haven't yet got around to listing these on your home page). There are literally thousands of tips there: in case you're not sure how to access this resource, type Prague into the box in the top right hand corner of this screen and press "Go". If you have three days, I think that a day tour would be a waste of money. There are many, many first division attractions in central Prague, most of which are easily 'walkable' from one another (assuming that you're in reasonable health) so you can do it much more cheaply yourself, and customise the content to match your interests. So I would suggest doing some research - fortunately you're in exactly the right place for that! - and concentrating on a couple of particular area each day (Mala Strana, Vyserhad etc.) and developing a loose itinerary> Loose enough to allow you to stop off en route to visit the many other fascinating things you'll stumble across on your way, since Prague's that type of city! My personal favourites? Well, the Mucha Museum is a must if you like Art Nouveau, as is the exquisite (but unexcitingly named) Municipal House, as well as the more off the beaten track attractions of stunning Vyserhad and the giant, faceless, bronze babies crawling over the Zizkov TV tower (which you can see from pretty well anywhere in the city, but have a look at my Prague page for a close up photo if this piques your interest). Especially if you are visiting in the summer months or over holiday periods, try to time your visits to the more heavily touristed attractions (the Astronomical Clock, the Charles Bridge) to try and avoid the crowds: early morning is the best bet. Happy planning: whatever you do in Prague, you're bound to have a joll! Regards Cathy

Just seconding the above posts --- Prague is a very nice city for walking so stay within or in close proximity to Stare Mesto / Nove Mesto / Mala Strana (old town / new town / lesser quarter). Then again, if your hotel is far from these places where the main sights are, you can easily use the tram to get there. See the Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral, the old town is beautiful with it's astronomical clock, cross the Charles Bridge (for sure you'll be doing this not only once, I did it several times) lots of activities on this pedestrian bridge. And a lot of things to see and do around these areas. Word of caution though, If you're taking the tram BE SURE TO VALIDATE/STAMP your ticket on the small machine upon entering the tram, because if you forgot and you'll got inspected by an occassional inspector, you'll be paying a fine of CZK700 (around US$40). I heard that from this fellow staying at the hotel where I was (a bit far from the center but very nice budget one). The poor guy complaining at the hotel reception who can do nothing anyway. You've been warned as more often than not, you'll be using the tram. I think I've written a detail on this on my tips. Prague is beautiful so enjoy it.

Whilst in Prague, aside from the obvious city sites, Id take a half day out and travel out to Kutna Hora, or the bone chapel, just east of the city. Youll never, ever forget that half day.

As previously mentioned go to Kutna Hora and visit the bone church . Its amazing. Very easy to find from the KH railway station (10mins walk) and then walk on into KH itself. A beautiful town. Only 1 hour on the (very cheap)train from Pragues main railwaay station.

Prague is a wonderful city. Our visit for Christmas 2001 was magical. We walked Charles Bridge, which may be Prague's most famous sight, in the snow on Christmas Eve. You can walk across Charles Bridge, many times. The towers at either end of the bridge, Lesser Town Bridge Tower and Old Town Bridge Tower, can be visited. Climb to the top of each for great views. Old Town Square is filled with many sights: the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, a fantastic Gothic church; the Astronomical Clock, see it when the clock strikes the hour, when the figures move about; Old Town Hall Tower and its interior; St. Nicholas Church Old Town Square; and the Monument to Jan Hass, an out-spoken religious reformer of the 15th century who was executed on the spot where the monument stands. If you like Art Nouveau, Prague has much to offer, including Municipal House, (Republic Square 5, Old Town) a fabulous Art Nouveau building, with a great French restaurant and cafe and a concert hall. Tours are offered of the Municipal House; the tour is popular, get there early. The Mucha Museum (Panska 7, New Town) is dedicated to the father of Art Nouveau, Alphonse Mucha. This museum is directly across the street from the Hotel Palace (www.palacehotel.cz), where we stopped for our visit. It is a fabulous hotel. We got a great room, with a view out over the roofs of Prague and of Castle Hill and St. Vitus Cathedral. Prague is known for its music, mostly classical but jazz is also popular. Concerts are given at many venues throughout the city. Signs posted along the street and flyers handed out on the street will give you notice of what is being performed and where. Do be cautious: those who hand out the flyers, some in period costume, can be aggressive. Wenceslas Square in New Town, is Prague’s main boulevard where many shops, bars, banks, casinos & hotels can be found. If you would like to take a break from the city center travel by Metro (only two stops) to Vysehrad Park, V Pevnosti 5b. You can have a picnic here and enjoy sweeping views of the River Vltava. Within the park is the fabulous Art-Nouveau decorated Church of Saints Peter & Paul. The cemetery next to the church is the final resting place for many Czech luminaries, including composer Antonin Dvorak, whose grave marker was created by his friend Auguste Rodin. The cemetery is an outdoor sculpture museum; I loved it. The Castle District offers many sights such as St. Vitus Cathedral, one of Prague's must see attractions; Prague Castle; and Golden Lane. If you need a special place to enjoy dinner, try La Perle de Prague. It is located at the top of what the locals call "the Fred and Ginger" building. Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the ING Building was built in 1996; it is located by the River Vltava and the restaurant offers clear views of Castle Hill. It is a very romantic place. We dined here our last night in Prague. Enjoy the City of One-Thousand Spires, one of my favorites.

I love Prague, and one of the most memorable sights for me is one that I rarely ever see recommended on travel boards anywhere, and that's the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church. If you are a student of WWII, or even find history mildly interesting, I think this is a must-see. prague.net/cyril-methodius-c... Before you go, try and see the film "Operation Daybreak", which tells the story and the aftermath of the Heydrich assasination. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075019/

Umm....beer during the day = more beer at night. The liquid gold in the Czech Republic is truly amazing. Couldn't see myself making it to an opera after quaffing a few....but maybe that's just me.

I'm with you, Wayne! Czech beer is reason enough to visit - but with (scant) respect, your compatriots should never have been allowed to defile Budva! We had Budweiser inflicted on us last year as the 'official beer' of the Soccer World Cup. Which came as somewhat of an umpleasant surprise to Heineken (who thought that they'd been afforded that privilege) and an even nastier one to us poor spectators at the games, who found that they had no alternative but to drink weasel p!ss which has never (and hopefully will never) be sold in this mafrket! Still, there's always a silver lining ... to my knowledge, there wasn't a single alcohol-related incident at the games ... probably because nobody could stomach drinking enough of that eveil brew to get halfway tiddly! The moral of this story? Simple: when in the Czech Republic, drink Budva in the original, as well as Pilsner Urquell (ironically now a brand that is part of the South African Breweries stable) and any other amber nectar that comes your way ... all highly recommended after extensive and gruelling fieldwork by selfless researchers such as myself with no thought for our own personal enjoyment!

Yeah right;) Budvar is one of my favorite libations(and that's saying something, I enjoy many) but don't be so critical in regards to Anheuser-Busch's product! It has many useful purposes, like washing my dog, getting stains out of the carpet, and....and....well, I'll think of something. In all seriousness though, despite all of us beer snobs, how is it that AB sells so much of their product outside of the U.S.?

No idea, but perhaps the 'cachet' factor ... it's American and advertised by celebrities so it must be good? Using it to wash the dog is an excellent idea: I had trouble identifying that elusive aftertaste, and now you mention it, it definitely had top notes of 'flea dip'!
