Is it doable? If so, I'd like to try it. Please suggest an itinerary (car or train, whichever is better). Thanks in advance.
I think it is not. Train/bus takes around 5 hors one way. That means you will spend traveling 10 hours - you have to start at 3 in the morning and come back very late, otherwise will have only 2-4 hours to see Prague. Going by car would be much better (faster and more flexible), but I would suggest to stay overnight in Prague. On the other hand, it is difficult to go around in the central part using a car, very difficult to find a spot to park.

I have seen it offered by a tourist bus company. From a timetable I kept (not sure how up to date it is) a train from vienna at around 6am will get you there around 10.30am and a train from prague at around 5.30 pm will get you back to vienna at around 10.30pm. That gives you seven hours. (there is a later connection but it takes an extra hour in travel time). The metro is right there and easy to navigate and get around. consider leaving all your stuff in vienna and travelling light for a one night stop-over. There is a lot to see and do.

Going to Prague and back in one day does not make much sense. I'd suggest leaving Vienna as early as possible and staying overnight in Prague. There's EC train (EC370) leaving Wien at 6:08, arriving Prague at 10:25. Earliest train for going back is 5:01 EC71 train from Prague arriving Vienna at 9:28.
