I have just read on various sites that it is very difficult to use my ATM cards in Portugal. I have STAR Visa Debit Card. The articles I have read say that Portugal has gone to one specific banking card. Would I be able to use an ATM at the Lisbon Airport to get Euros? Or, to be on the safe side, is it best to take US Dollars and exchange them for Euros at the Airport or Lisbon banks? Thank you for any help you can provide. Ann
Hi Ann, I never heard about anyone having problems with ATM cards in Portugal. And yes you would be able to use an ATM at the Lisbon Airport to get Euros. Enjoy Portugal! Nat

Portugal has one of the most advanced ATM systems in the world. There are plenty of cash dispensers everywhere and they accept almost all cards and do all sorts of operations (since paying the electricity bill, to concert tickets, charging the mobile phone, your transports signature card, ...). Never heard any problem in using cards in Portugal. I had a Maestro and a Visa debit and credit card and I don't recall any problem withdrawing cash anywhere. Although I never heard of Star visa if it is Visa I don't think you'll have any problems. Take care and have a nice trip!

The only problem you will have using your ATM card is the exorbitant fee charged by your own bank for a cash withdrawal in a different currency! Check that out before you leave. If there is a fixed fee, avoid making small cash withdrawals or using it for small purchases as appropriate. Use your ATM card in shops and restaurants as you would at home. ATM here are labelled 'MULTIBANCO' and are plentiful as has been said. Also note: The maximum cash withdrawal in one transaction is €200, although some machines will allow two such transactions in one day thus making a €400 withdrawal possible. Bring a small amount of cash just to be on the safe side; it has been known for the entire Multibanco network to crash just when you need it! Hope that helps.

I'll breathe a sigh of relief knowing that my ATM card should work in Portugal. Thank you all for your responses. Can't wait to spend 5 days in Lisbon. Ann

I never had a problem at ATM in Portugal. One thing to remember though, there is a daily limit to protect you against somebody using your card. In 2006 it was 200 euro.
