Hi everyone, I'll be in Portugal for two weeks from next Tuesday on. We'll be one week in the Algarve, then for another week in Portugal and Lisbon. We're thinking of hiring a car for at least part of the time. I am not entirely sure whether we need it for the first couple of days, though we do want it for some day trips around the Algarve in the latter half of the first week and I am also thinking of saving some taxi money for the drive from the airport to the hotel, so am tempted on hiring the car for the entire two weeks. Avis looks reasonable enough with car hires starting from a little bit less than €300, but I am now wondering whether there may be cheaper local options around as well. Any recommendations? Thanks Holger
Hi Holger, You will find car hire companies on almost evers street corner in the Algarve towns like Albufeira. We hired a car through our travel company rep in the hotel, but there are good offers to be had, like pay for 3 days, and get it for 5 days. You may get a better deal on your arrival than booking before you go. To me, it seemed that most, if not all, of the hire companies offerd more or less similar deals. A car is essential, and driving in Portugal is very easy, and nicer than Spain. Enjoy your holiday. Regards from Cornwall.

Thanks for your help and re-assurance that driving is easier than in Spain. LOL I am also glad to hear that the deals are probably roughly the same. I hate bargain hunting, though I may indeed wait with the rental until after my arrival. Holger
