Can i go from Milan to Portofino and back by train in 1 day and see much of Portofino? What is the best way to get there from Milan?
best way and more scenic is by car: never taken train in that route, Portofino dont recall seen a train station but yuou can check here

the route - train milan to genoa, change for train headed south toward la spezia. get off in santa margherita ligure, take the orange bus from in front of the station direct to the center of portofino.
should advise you that there is not a whole lot to see in portofino. check out the harbor, see the church of st george maybe by climbing the hill, check out a few brutally priced eateries and stores, get back on the bus. beautiful but a lot of travel for really very little.

There is no railway station in Portofino so, as noted above, you will take the train from Milan Centrale to Santa Margherita Ligure and then the bus to Portofino.
Train journey time is from 2h 18m. There are some direct trains...e.g. at 0810...so you do not always have to change. One-way fare is from 20 euro (the direct train).

While I'll have to agree that there's little to see and do other than to admire the beautiful quaint village going up the hills, it is an enjoyable village. However as previously mentioned it's a long trip for a beautiful photo of the village.
