Hi Porto-Community, I would like to use one day of my visit for exploring the hilly landscape in the east at the Duoro. I already did some research, however, i couldn't find any way to get to the east (no train, ...). Hope, that you know how to get there and maybe you have some must-see-locations/hiking trails for me. Thank you a lot! Hedap
There are trains every day going east from the Sao Bento station in Porto. Trains are quite frequent to Regua and some trains even go a little further inland. You might also wanna consider taking one of the many tour boats that ply the river Douro. You could take a boat up the river to Regua an then return with the train. The company called Douru Azul can organise all these tickets for you.

exploring landscape east, well what are your interests of going there? you can look here and see if it has something you like to do then can come back for details here porto-tourism.com/how-to-get... I go there often as have branch nearby , Muterde is Barreiro nice wine area too.Maybe you like that ?

Look at cp.pt/cp/displayPage.do?vgne... and you'll see a map showing the line east of Porto that Claus referred to. Were you looking at the official Portuguese rail website? www.cp.pt - look for the red and blue icon at the top - click on that to get English. Note that other websites often don't show all trains in Europe... Bill

The local trains will get you from Porto along the Douro as far as Pinhao but beyond there to the Spanish border is very sparsely populated and there is no train and almost no bus, maybe only one or two each day between the larger places. In fact in much of that area, the Douro runs through areas far away from any village or town.

And if you can find a train to Pinhao that fits your schedule then you should go there as Pinhao is a lot more scenic that Reagua, but you have more frequency to Regua than Pinhao because Regua is a commercial hub.

I made a mistake above. The end of the line is Pocinho, not Pinhao. But it takes about three hours to reach Pocinho from Porto so it would be a very long day trip. The earliest possible train leaves Porto Campanhã station at 0730 and the last train back to Porto leaves Pocinho at 1905 hours. These trains have no on board facilities so it is essential you take your own supplies of food and drink.

thank you for all your replies. I really enjoyed my time in Porto and travelled by train to Rede. Rainy day but still a beautiful landscape!
