Unsafe Areas in Portland

by ragazza27 Online Now Aug 19, 2011 at 7:12 AM

Hello, my boyfriend and I will be visiting Portland in Oct. Was curious if NW Naito Pwky is a good place to stay...that's where our vacation rental that we're looking at is located. I've heard that Old Town is a bit unsafe and know that we're near it so wanted to make sure that area is okay. Also, looking at Hotel Modera if anyone thinks that's in a better location. Thank you!

Naito Pkwy is generally a good area to stay in. It's more residential, so it may not be as active at night as other areas. There are parts of Old Town that are a little sketchy. I wouldn't walk around too late at night alone there, but it's generally okay.

There are a few homeless shelters in that area, and so there are people that will ask for money like you get in any major urban area. However, for the most part they are harmless. It makes people uncomfortable, but in terms of actual safety this area really isn't that bad. Furthermore, NW Natio Parkway isn't that close to Old Town. Physically it is close, but the way the road and sidewalk situation is, to get from one to the other is quite a long and involved process. The least safe parts of Portland are now some of the more suburban locations as that is where a lot of the drug gang activity has relocated. However, there really are not safety problems in Portland that are any worse than any other city.
