Hi We will be visiting Pondicherry - december 2011 family of 4 including 8 year old child. Limited time but hope to see the best on offer. Suggestions will be appreciated. thanks

I didn't see this before answering about Ooty above. Chidambaram is MUCH closer to Pondy than it is to Ooty, so you should group these two together instead.

I stayed at the International Guest House, part of the Aurobindi Ashram accommodation lot, actually I've stayed there twice. It's very central, amazingly cheap ( rs 400 a night) and clean. The cleaners ion each floor are charming which off-sets the surliness of reception nicely. I will visit again.

Hi Cilsley We will be visiting the ashram at Pondicherry but with the limited time frame - will be booking into a hotel and making a day trip. Thanks

I would agree with cilsley . Stay in Ashram Guest house. Ashram is in heart of Pondi and close to beach. Staying in hotel will not make any difference in terms of location. Once in Pondi, ask the Taxi/Auto driver to head to Ashram (do not mention hotel or guest house ... they have commission sharing and will tend to take you to hotel of their choice). Once in Ashram ask for the guest house. Pondi is a small place but take a trip to Auroville.

The Ashram is well outside Pondi...the guest house is in the centre. I have always 'phoned ahead, booked in.
