Public transportation from Poitiers to St-Loup for day trip

by kpk082048 Online Now Dec 15, 2012 at 7:03 AM

Hello, I am visiting Poitiers in February and want to visit the birthplace of Saint Theophane Vernard in St-Loup, is there any public transportation that would allow a day trip there and does anyone know where I could get city information about St-Loup and sites related to Saint Theophane, thank you Kevin

Alternatively, you could take a train Poitiers to Parthenay..about 20km from Saint-Loup-Lamaire, and then a taxi onwards.

Best to book the taxi in advance, and for your return to Parthenay. You can see contact details for local taxi companies on this page:

    web.cc-parthenay.fr/VisiteEt...

Train times, details and fares in French (easy to work out) here:

    http://www.voyages-sncf.com/

Journey time is around 55 minutes, one-way fare is 10.30euro. This is not a journey where you need to buy tickets online in advance; just get them at the station on the day you travel.

You could be in Parthenay by 0855 and need not return from Parthenay to Poitiers until the last train at 2005, giving you ample time to explore.

I have not been able to find a Parthenay>Saint-Loup-Lamaire bus as yet, although one may exist.

The saint was born in Saint-Loup-sur-Thouet which has joined with Lamaire to make Saint-Loup-Lamaire. If you put Saint-Loup-Lamaire into googlemaps and zoom in you will see the settlement of Saint-Loup-sur Thouet marked by the riverside.

    Hi,
There is a way to do this by public transport, it takes some time but can be done. First from the station in Poitiers take the bus (sncf) for Parthenay. Here is the timetable, I used the 7th February to get this. voyages-sncf.com/billet-trai...
In Parthenay you will find a local bus heading for Thouars. This will take you to St. Loup. On the link below scroll down to the second page and you have the timetable in the direction you want. Use page 1 for the return.

    deux-sevres.com/deux-sevres/...

Here is the wiki page for Saint Theophane.

    Good luck with your adventure.

Here's the timetable for a Parthnay>Saint-Loup-Lamaire bus...you will note that it only runs during school terms:

    deux-sevres.com/deux-sevres/...

I think you will need to take the earliest train from Poitiers (0640) unless oyu are happy to make a short visit of less than 4 hours.

I don't think it's an adventure at all, Max.

Taking the train and/or a bus is very easy indeed. I do it all the time when I'm travelling. :-)

O poo, Paul....I am soooo sorry!

Yes, you're dead right: I was researching when you posted and then just responded to Max's adventure comment.

Buses may not be that frequent but they *do* run (assuming the OP is visiting during the school term) and the timetable show you exactly when. So..no biggie, although it makes sense to be at the bus stop at least 10 minutes before the bus is due imo. :-)

No problem at all J, but on the timetable you have both, during school term and also holidays, so there is everything there he needs.

knowing the area, and my boy school days, the best in the area is the taxi or rental car. There is a bus running but not often enough for my travel needs.

the info on the saint in French
    agape.forumactif.com/t1628-s...
    and the diocese of Poitiers
    diocese-poitiers.com.fr/spir...

to see the chapel where he pray you need a car , going out of the village of Saint Loup sur Thouet along the river Thouet, you will see the chapel done in his honor, he used to come here in the area to pray and they built it in his honor.

you can write for detail info on your trip to the mayor's office at email
    mairie-st-loup-lamaire@wanadoo.fr
    they will help

    hope it helps your planning
