Unfortunately, all the 4 hotels near the Plitvice Lake Park are full for the days that we are hoping to visit. If we decide to stay in one of the guest houses in the town of Plitvicka Jezera (not necessarily by the park), how do you get to the park from the town without a car? Or is a car necessary? We were hoping to travel from Zagreb, stay a couple of nights in Plitvice, then proceed to Split, all via buses, but is it better to just do Plitvice as a day trip from Zagreb, stay in Zagreb, and travel to Split from Zagreb? We really are hoping not to rent a car. Thanks.
Plitvice Jezera isn't really a town. It's just a name given to the place where the bus drops you off. I would suggest you use google maps to have a look around. There are the hotels, there is a campground, and there are guesthouses along the main road and in a couple of villages. I would suggest you book in advance with a guest house within hiking distance (I suppose you're Ok with doing a few km on foot, or you wouldn't visit the national park...) and ask your host to pick you up at the bus stop. Then just explore the area on foot. Use google maps to find places that are within a distance you're willing to walk.

I think it's better to spend a full day/2 nights at Plitvice Lakes... I stayed 8km away at hotels.com/ho351964/house-ti... and thought it was very good. I had a car though. House Tina offers airport transportation... perhaps they will also offer transportation to the park? It may be worth contacting them to find out and perhaps they will have other suggestions for you on getting from their location to the park.

No, car is not necessary if you stay along the main road in some of the villages (Grabovac, Korenica or other) as there are many buses doing that route. Also, it is one of most touristiest areas in country, so they have many guests like you without car and not wanting to rent any. You should ask the guesthouse owner too, if they can drop you off at either entrance one or 2. Finally, if you feel lost with arranging bus transport, then at least landowner can call you a taxi from one of the towns. Or, like someone noted, walking few kilometers is also an option.
