First Time Visitor, need help

by jobronie Online Now Aug 31, 2009 at 12:30 PM

I will be travelling to Pittsburgh for the first time in Oct. for the Cirque Du Soleil show at the Petersen Events Center. Can anyone give me a good hotel and/or restaurant suggestion? Is this in a good part of town? What part should we stay clear of? Any information is appreciated.

The Peterson Center is on the University of Pittsburgh campus. It's a pretty good area. Carnegie-Mellon is also near there, so it's definitely a college area.
For hotels, it depends on your price range. There's a Wyndham and a Holiday Inn within walking distance though.
For restaurants, you should eat at Primanti Brothers at least once. There's a location on Forbes that's maybe 3 blocks from the Peterson Center.

However, beware that the Hill District, one of Pittsburgh's worst slums is uphill from the the University of Pittsburgh campus and between the campus and downtown Pittsburgh. As long as you stay in the Oakland neighborhood (which contains the Pitt and Carnegie Mellon campuses)you should be OK. If you ask people around the campus, they will be able to tell you where you should be OK to walk and where you should avoid.

Pittsburgh is a fascinating, underrated city and one that we always have enjoyed visiting. Feel free to visit our Pittsburgh page here on VirtualTourist for more information.
