Where to stay - Athens center or Piraeus

Hi, We are taking a cruise from the Port in Piraeus in October. It embarks on a Tuesday evening. We will be flying in from JFK and arriving on Sunday midday. Is it better to get a hotel in the center of Athens or at the Port in Piraeus? We would like to spend Monday and Tuesday checking out some of the wonderful Athens sights. Any suggestions? How far is it from the airport to center of Athens? How far from the airport to the Port? If we stay at the port the few nights it would be easy to connect with the cruise ship on Tuesday. Would it be an equal advantage for sightseeing in and around Athens? Thanks, Marty NYC
