I will be travelling from Picton to Christchurch. I can use either the intercity coach or the tranzcoastal train. Which would be a better option? Or perhaps a car?
i am reasonably sure the coach will be a lot cheaper cheaper than a car too

Agree with Jen, but a car would give you the freedom to stop and look where you wanted to.

At the moment the train is not running because after the February earthquake there has not been enough demand for the train, so they run a bus as alternative offer. Check here about changes, as I do not know when you want to travel: tranzscenic.co.nz/services/t... (There are weekly updates.) One way fares are from NZ$ 49 at the moment. On the Intercity bus the non-refundable ticket costs from NZ$ 25, so clearly the cheaper option. As long as the train does not run it makes no sense to book the replacement bus. Surely a rental car gives you the possibility to stop wherever you want to. But if the train runs you have great photo options from the viewing carriage.

Train sounds nice and easy as you can chill out and relax while seeing the beautiful scenery. If you do decide to rent a car, make sure you take a Transfercar as they are free to drive. You may still have to pay for gas though.

Bonzarella, the problem is that the train does not operate at the moment!
