Advice on Phnom Penh accommodation

by Johncourt Online Now Oct 24, 2010 at 12:05 PM

Hi All, My wife and I will be travelling to PP from Siem Reap on 20th Feb 2011 with the intention of spending a week in PP before going to Kep/Kampot. We would appreciate very much to have some personal recommendations for places to stay in PP. We are mature travellers (66/54) and, whilst cost is still of some concern it is not a major constraint. Given our "advanced" years, we have moved beyond the stage of being able to sleep anywhere to wanting something that is comfortable with basic facilities such as private bathroom etc. Any guidance you can give us would be much appreciated. Thanks John and Cath

I have stayed more than once at the Royal Inn (you can look at their website) and have been satisfied. it is not by the quay and you may wish to consider a hotel near the river front. if you are arriving by bus from SRP to PNH, the bus station is a mayhem and be careful, it would be wonderful if your hotel can pick you up rather than hassling with the touts and drivers.

I recomend the Bouganvillier Hoetl right on Sisowath Quay overlooking the river and in the heart of PP tourist area , so you can step out of the hotel onto the intersting part of the evening walk. It is at #277C, Quay Sisowath, Phnom Penh 12306, Cambodia Tel: (855) 23 220 528, Fax: (855) 23 220 529 and the web site is bougainvillierhotel.com/inde... When we stayed there we had the top floor - 2 rooms ,balcony, small vestibule between the rooms very French feel and very comfortable and nicely presented. Frnch style breakfast in the morning. A top class 3 star ( maybe 4) hotel. Rooms in the70-$100 so certainly not the lowest cost accomodation in PP. If you want lower cost , around the NGO district there are significantly lower cost options.

John and Cath, sorry about the slow reply but I would also add the Angkor Reach, just off 51st Street. It's nothing fancy but clean, cheap and safe. My review and further details are here. Phnom Penh Hotel Tips by planxty Hope this assists, fergy.

The Blue Tongue Hotel - google for details we stayed three nights - big room - big bathroom with power shower so you need to have slippers outside bathroom door as the floor gets quite wet from shower Breakfast basic but OK - check prices on Agoda - we got a last minute rate (applies to many hotels who advertise on this site) - about £30 - I carried a laptop so I could monitor the Agoda prices and the savings made through last minute offers was very worthwhile we walked to see the sights - (mature and need the excercise) - good shopping mall 10 minutes away (Sorya Shopping Mall) with Lucky supermarket - we had picnics with Western food which I was missing!!! got some nice presents in the mall.. we took the bus from SR to PP - make sure you visit the Lucky Supermarket in SR and stock up for the bus trip - water / biscuits / snacks etc - Blue Tongue is about 10 mins by tuk-tuk from bus depot - depot baggage staff helped me with this and no rip off A week in PP may be two days toooo long PM me if you would like any further info

I stayed at Hotel Cara and thought it was good value for money but still clean and comfortable and close to Sisowath Quay. They can buy you bus tickets to PP if you like but I would suggest you walk along Sisowath Quay and choose from the many places selling bus tickets. That way you can choose the quality of the bus/coach and time of departure etc. I actually took the bus from PP to Battambang, and then took a boat to Siem Reap. The boat ride is very scenic but a bit long, about 5 hours (even though they tell you its about 3 hours). But I went in October when water levels are high. It wont be so high in Feb.
