I am currently doing an Ilocandia-Baguio itinerary for my family. We are set to leave on Dec. 26 for Ilocos and then onward to Baguio on the 29th. I have made arrangements for an overnight stay at Pagudpud on the 27 and then at Vigan on the 28th because it is nearer to Baguio. Where should we spend the night on the 26th? I don't want my husband to be too tired from driving so I didn't want to go directly to pagudpud. What options do I have then? Is it better to spend first night at vigan then go to pagudpud and then back to vigan? We plan to go to laoag too. would it be best to stay in laoag instead?
I did Baguio first when I made this similar travel. In another travel, I went directly to Laoag from Manila. You can book at Laoag on your first night as Pagudpud is another 2 hour drive away. Early morning, depart from Laoag and visit the sites between Laoag and Pagudpud (Cape Bojeador, Bangui Windmills, to name a few). You can opt to stop already at Paoay church and the Marcos Mausoleum also (between Vigan and Laoag) so you can just go straight to Vigan on your way back. I suggest you leave early in the morning of the 26th and take a leisurely time driving to Laoag. Make some stopovers at La Union, either Agoo or San Fernando to break the monotony.

I would have recommended that you take the Paoay route going to Laoag so you can already pass by Malacanang of the North but then 26th is a Monday and it is closed during Mondays. When you go back to Vigan from Laoag, use the Paoay route if you intend to visit Malacanang of the North. In Paoay, I would recommend you stop by Herencia Cafe for their Pinakbet and Dinuguan Pizza. :) It's situated right in front of Paoay church.

This is why I love VT. Straight answers from people who do know. hahaha Great tip. thank you so much. I had the same thing in mind actually but wasn't sure about it so I had to confer with someone. It will be my first time in the Ilocos Region and your suggestions seem to be practical for us.

One more thing Jane. The Sta.Maria Church in Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur is also near the highway. It's one of the four churches in the Philippines included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Paoay church is also included so you'll be able to see both in this trip.

Is the Marcos museum worth going to? I'm thinking of skipping it.

It's quite near the highway so I don't think it will take much of your time. Just take a couple of pictures, see Marcos' mausoleum and continue with your journey. Going to Laoag from Vigan, turning right will lead you Batac and the Marcos Mausoleum. If you turn left, that will lead you to Paoay church.
