Philadelphia hotels, transport and attractions

by drandy Online Now Oct 19, 2009 at 8:22 AM

We will be visiting Philly in December , grateful if anyone can offer some tips on convenient and clean/comfortable hotels. We will be traveling from Baltimore, will spend 2 to 3 nights here before moving to NYC,we are looking especially for hotels with family suites. What are the things that first time visitors should not miss here? Any recommendation for good restaurants/eating places and local fares not to be missed. Will getting around by public transport be convenient? Or is there any hop on/hop off service for visitors? Thanks.

    > What are the things that first time visitors should not miss here?

Before I, or anyone else, can give any meaningful advice to this question, we MUST know exactly what you hope to experience during your visit. People can (and I'm sure will) give meaningless advice on what THEY would enjoy, but that's no guarantee it would be something YOU would enjoy. Something we would find fascinating might well be something you would find boring.

    Check
    www.gophila.com
for general info on attractions (particularly family ones in December) and lodging bargains. If, after studying this and finding things YOU would enjoy, you can ask us specific questions.

    > good restaurants/eating places and local fares not to be missed
What's your food preferences? What's your budget? Will you bring your kids? All of these make a HUGE difference.

    > Will getting around by public transport be convenient?

You're crazy if you get around in any way except public transport. Parking is either non-existent or expensive, streets are narrow, and drivers are insanely belligerent.

    > any hop on/hop off service for visitors?

The Phlash Bus will no longer be running in December.

    www.bigbustours.com/eng/philadelphia/custompage.aspx?id=faqs
notes that, in December,27 per adult and10 per child will get you 24 hours to ride the Big Bus AND the Trolley Works tours. These stop running after 4 pm in winter.

    Meanwhile
    www.septa.org/fares/independence.html
notes that25 will allow five people (at least on adult, but no more than two) to ride all SEPTA buses, subways, trolleys, and regional rails for one day -- and these continue till early in the morning.
