1 day in Petra

by christih Online Now Aug 19, 2010 at 2:33 AM

I am working in Jordan (Amman) for 5 days and really want to fit in 1 day to visit Petra (I wish that I had longer). The only free day will be Friday Oct 1st. What is the best way to travel from/and return to Amman and fit in seeing the best of Petra in such a short space of time? Many thanks.

Petra is a big site. In hot weather it's an endurance test to begin to do it justice. In one day you need to concentrate on giving yourself the maximum time you can to visit and then don't rush. I'd say aim to see half of the site at a comfortable pace rather than all of it in the heat and end up exhausted. The return walk out of the Siq is uphill (you won't notice it's downhill on the way in) so allow for that. The High Place of Sacrifice and the Monastery both take a fair climb. The Monastery is the one to go for if you're up to it, but it's the longest walk and the highest climb, so decide how you feel about it when you get there. I would try and get to Petra by car, as early as possible. If you use public transport you're not going to get there very early. You might manage to get a bus back OK though. Can you maybe hire a driver for the day? There are loads of hotels in Wadi Musa. Do you have time/money to get a bus the evening before so you can start first thing with your visit? The only other thought I can offer is that there must be bus trips for the day from Amman with a guide. We had a good guide and it helps a lot to get the feel of the place if you can have maybe 2-3 hours of guided tour and then the same on your own.

Like kakapo said, I think you could do it if you hired a car and left early. It would be your most efficiant way. Even more efficient if you have a driver who knows the way (but this may be cost prohibitIve. OR - if you have a garmin gps they have maps for Jordan that you can download) The sun rises at about 6:30 at that time of year... If you set out then you could be in Petra by 10:00. Do not stop at the markets, go right to the siq for a walk into the ancient city. Walking in is a MUST! Have a wonder around, something to eat and drink, then look around a bit more. Then when the clock starts ticking, hire a horse or donkey to take you out. The sun sets in Amman at about 6:30 pm, so if you leave Petra by 2:30 you should be back before dark. Amman is a difficult city to navigate in the daylight, better to avoid driving after dark. If I had one day to make it to Petra, I would bust my butt to get there. It is that worth seeing. Good luck and enjoy Jordan (even if you do have to work ;))
