Will spend around 8 hrs in St. Petersburg, suggestions on what to see during that time! :)

Hi all!
My bf nd I are thinking of taking a cruise from Helsinki to St Petersburg, where we will spend arnd 8 hours. Im a bit overwhelmed as there seems to be so much to do in the city, thats why i want to know from the people that have been there, what is a MUST see and experience in order to get the whole St Petersburg vibe? I dont want the day to be fully packed and only being in museums; it would be nice to waalk arnd and maybe do some shopping.

We will be visiting Peterhof on the 15th/16th May 2013, will the fountains be open? I read that the official opening date is the 18th May
