Early train?

by FridgeMagnet Online Now Jun 26, 2012 at 8:58 AM

Anyone ever get the 06.10 train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Pichu? It arrives at 07.40. Is it worth it to be there that early. I am thinking of an 08.53 train otherwise. It's still there by 10.30.

The early train gets you a head start on the day-trippers from Cusco. When we went, they arrived around 10:00 or 10:30. Machu Picchu is quite enjoyable before the day trippers arrive mid-morning and after they leave again mid-afternoon.

I stayed the night before in Aguas Calientes and so was able to catch one of the first buses, at around 5.20, so as to be at MP when the gates opened. I was glad afterwards, because a lot of people arrived at the site mid-morning - and also, it started to rain around 11.30 although it was sheer luck that I had already climbed around a lot of the site by then! So yes, the earlier the better, I'm afraid, as arriving at 10:30 at Aguas Calientes, you won't be at the site until at least 11 and possibly later (depending on connections, whether or not you need to check your stuff at MP, etc.). See here for information on buses: machupicchu-inca.com/aguas-c...

The earlier the better so if possible take the 7:40 train. I hiked to MP on the Inca Trail and the difference in the experience between before the crowds and after them is tremendous so enjoy those earlier hours.

I thought I would give that a miss. Blood pressure! Don't want to die up there.
